Cannabis Capitalism Radio: CBD, Hemp, Flower–What makes up the Industry?

Karen Rands is taking the Compassionate Capitalist Radio Show into new territory to share with her listeners the economic impact of the growing trend legalizing various forms of Cannabis. In this segment of the Cannabis Capitalism Radio, Karen Rands will talk with Michael Patterson on the various types of raw materials that make up the Cannabis Industry, and how they are commercialized. Before there was legalization of Cannabis for medicinal and recreational use, there were elements and variations of the Cannabis Plant that were legal and already being commercialized for many different consumer and industrial uses. Michael is a recognized expert in the industry in the commercialization of Hemp. You may be surprised that Hemp has been cultivated to replace fossil fuels in many derivative products.

Listen to this segment to learn how and what the future may hold when it comes to the various products derived from Cannabis. Michael Patterson is the CEO of US Cannabis Pharmaceutical Research and Development LLC, a privately-held developmental consulting firm which was established in 2014 with a mission of moving society forward through legalized cannabis. US Cannabis develops the legal cannabis/hemp market across all platforms. Karen Rands is the Founder of Kugarand Capital Holdings, a full service advisory firm to entrepreneurs seeking to launch and grow their businesses with insight on best practices and access to capital. She is the best selling author of Inside Secrets to Angel Investing and is leading the Compassionate Capitalist Movement–with the goal to increase participation in private investment in entrepreneurism.

Steinbeck uses the land to ground his characters’ sense of self. The land gives them an identity, a past and a future. Steinbeck depicts the land as having a soul, and performing manual labor on that land provides a deeper understanding of life. The farmers derive wisdom from the land; it helps with their thought processes and decision making. The heartlessness of tractors and the detachment of landowners disrupt the farmers’ connection to the land.

This theme has roots in American romanticism, as intellectuals like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau explored how land ownership and hard work equate to independence. The industrial economy adversely affects the farmers, forcing the banks, portrayed as monsters, to foreclose on unprofitable land. For the farmers, modernization not only alters their way of life, but also their romantic attachment to the land. While the state does not suffer the same weather-related problems as Oklahoma, industrial agriculture has resulted in only a select few owning land, leaving smaller farmers displaced and migrants expecting work. In both cases, industrial agriculture challenges the Jeffersonian view of the hard-working, noble farmer as a romantic American figure; the new owners have no emotional connection to the land, regarding it only through paper or plunder.

As small farmers lost their land to larger operations and owners grew scarcer, workers were imported, abused, and forced to work on credit, sometimes even owing money to their employer. The men who own the land there hold the power, and attempt to control supply and demand so that they can get away with paying poor wages.

Organizations Funded by George Soros and His Open Society Foundations

The lower portion of the page focuses on organizations which do not receive direct funding from Soros and OSF, but which receive money from one or more groups that do get direct OSF funding. Organizations that, in recent years, have received direct funding and assistance from George Soros and his Open Society Foundations include the following. America Votes: Soros also played a major role in creating this group, whose get-out-the-vote campaigns targeted likely Democratic voters. Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now: This group conducts voter mobilization drives on behalf of leftist Democrats. Human Rights First: This group supports open borders and the rights of illegal aliens; charges that the Patriot Act severely erodes Americans’ civil liberties; has filed amicus curiae briefs on behalf of terror suspect Jose Padilla; and deplores the Guantanamo Bay detention facilities.

Joint Victory Campaign 2004: Founded by George Soros and Harold Ickes, this group was a major fundraising entity for Democrats during the 2004 election cycle. Media Fund: Soros played a major role in creating this group, whose purpose was to conceptualize, produce, and place political ads on television, radio, print, and the Internet. Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund: This group advocates open borders, free college tuition for illegal aliens, lowered educational standards to accommodate Hispanics, and voting rights for criminals. National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy: This group depicts the United States as a nation in need of dramatic structural change financed by philanthropic organizations. National Lawyers Guild: This group promotes open borders; seeks to weaken America’s intelligence-gathering agencies; condemns the Patriot Act as an assault on civil liberties; rejects capitalism as an unviable economic system; has rushed to the defense of convicted terrorists and their abettors; and generally opposes all U.S.

foreign policy positions, just as it did during the Cold War when it sided with the Soviets. Shadow Democratic Party: This is an elaborate network of non-profit activist groups organized by George Soros and others to mobilize resources – money, get-out-the-vote drives, campaign advertising, and policy iniatives – to elect Democratic candidates and guide the Democratic Party towards the left. These include organizations which do not receive direct funding from Soros and OSF, but which are funded by one or more organizations that do.

CAPITALISM IS OVER IF YOU WANT IT

In a city that is rapidly changing to cater to the one-percent at every level, Clarion Alley Mural Project is one of the last remaining truly punk venues in San Francisco, organized by a core and revolving group of individuals who have collectively volunteered tens of thousands of hours throughout its history over the past 21 years. As part of CAMP’s mission to be a force for those who are marginalized and a place where culture and dignity speak louder than the rules of private property or a lifestyle that puts profit before compassion, respect, and social/economic/environmental justice, CAMP artists/organizers Megan Wilson, Christopher Statton, and Mike Reger have just completed Clarion Alley Mural Project’s Wall of Shame and Solutions to address the current crisis of displacement and the dismantling of our city’s historic culture. Wilson herself was evicted in 2008 through the Ellis Act from her home of 13 years. In 2013 she was evicted from her studio at 340 Bryant Street, along with 150 other artists, by developer Joy Ou of Group i to make way for new tech offices. 340 Bryant Street was one of the last remaining affordable industrial spaces for artists’ studios in San Francisco. San Francisco is experiencing a massive displacement of its residents, its communities, and its diverse culture – as the high tech industry and its workers continue to move into our City and to recruit more and more of its employees from outside of the Bay Area.

High numbers of foreigners are buying up property in San Francisco as second or third homes, contributing to the shortage of affordable housing. Those being forced out of their homes and neighborhoods include longtime residents, local businesses, and non-profit social service and arts organizations – agencies that act as integral parts to the neighborhoods they live in and serve. It’s been truly heartbreaking to watch so many people who have spent many years creating and contributing to our communities be forced to leave because, while they have plenty of creativity, energy, and love for their neighborhoods, they don’t have enough money to keep their homes, small businesses, and community-based organizations. This is an epidemic rooted in a systemic war being forged by politicians and for-profit interests across the world. All eyes throughout the world are now on San Francisco and watching as the city that was once known for its progressive free-love counterculture is rapidly being dismantled by free-market capitalism on steroids.

Post-prohibition Cannabis Education for a Drug War Free World

Where does the legal cannabis industry fit, is the question at hand. In the U.S., cannabis culture comes from the 1960s, associated with two very particular forms of social movement: counterculture and the antiwar left. It’s even an open question whether it was the hippies or the soldiers that really brought cannabis consumption into Western culture, given the extent to which Vietnam soldiers and vets adopted cannabis use as way to cope with existing in the middle of a war that didn’t make sense as well as the trauma of living through it and coming home – yes, often with suitcases of hash and opium for entrepreneurial reasons. The existence of a cultural market for cannabis led, eventually, to the commercialization of that market when the U.S. government got the Mexican government to use Paraquat to eradicate the fields supplying urban veterans of the counterculture and foreign wars.

That’s when the modern cannabis cultural economy was mixed, when producing cannabis for profit slid in – fairly easily – with the rural spaces inhabited by the remnants of the counterculture that were already hybridizing with rural values and people. This was an alliance that protected cannabis production and consumption for everyone, not just hippies, vets, and people that rejected the characterization of cannabis as a threat to society. The wave of legislation behind the creation of regulated cannabis markets has certainly crippled the prospects of total cannabis prohibition around the world. We are facing a split that was really there all along, between the value of those for whom cannabis markets are an end to themselves; and the value of cannabis markets as a means for creating a more just and peaceful world. Libertarian entrepreneurialism has a problem with over-regulation that constructs new barriers between the cannabis haves and have-nots, for different reasons than the progressive peaceniks.

Corporate cannabis interests support artificial, non-market-derived barriers to protect their returns on investment, while progressive liberals support regulations to protect consumers and non-cannabis culture stakeholders whose support was necessary to accomplish legalization-with-prohibition. The realist in me says that regulated cannabis markets are likely to be dominated by the former value, exchange value, rather than other values like compassion and restorative justice. The cultural economy of cannabis is evolving, and we are too.

Seems like the Pope Has Conservative Paul Ryan Rattled

When 1.3 million Americans lose their unemployment benefits on Saturday, they can thank Rep. Paul Ryan. Friends say the man who once worshipped Ayn Rand now takes Pope Francis as his moral role model. It’s true that while knuckle-draggers like Rush Limbaugh attack the pope as a Marxist, Ryan has praised him, which I guess takes a tiny bit of courage since normally Republicans don’t like to buck the leader of their party. Beltway journalists would have us believe Ryan’s love for the guy from Argentina is triggering genuine new interest in helping the poor.

I admit, I have been immune to Ryan’s various efforts to brand himself as a bright and innovative Republican over the years – and I continue to be. Now we’re supposed to believe Ryan is going to deliver an anti-poverty agenda as soon as the spring. Ryan’s prescription for the poor is, and always has been, a dose of discipline. Woodson apparently finds Ryan a one-man enterprise zone for restoring his national profile. When asked what Ryan has done tangibly for the poor, the Republican came up with one word: neckties.

Apparently, according to Woodson, Ryan sent neckties to a classroom of teenagers after one admired his while he was visiting. In the spirit of the holiday season, I have to admit there’s something a little bit touching about Ryan’s insistence that the GOP needs an anti-poverty agenda. I have no doubt Pope Francis would support extended unemployment benefits, and a host of other policies to make life easier for poor people and help them find genuine opportunity.

Spiritual Capitalism

Dana Zohar and Ian Marshall, who wrote the book, Spiritual Capital: Wealth We Can Live By, are a fascinating, couple married to each other. Marshall is a Jungian-oriented psychiatrist and psychotherapist. The authors argue that material capitalism, the kind that predominates in America’s corpocracy, is unsustainable, depleting our natural resources, creating political and social instability, eroding our moral standards, and degrading the very meaning of life in terms of its deepest values and aspirations. Maybe their examples unwittingly help to validate their assertion that material capitalism is in a state of crisis. There is much about Zohar and Marshall’s views and ideas with which I agree, such as their view that the capitalism prevailing today is unsustainable and thus needs to be transformed, not totally dismantled.

The authors are creative thinkers who forced me repeatedly to think outside my own relatively narrow paradigms. At the same time, the authors’ analysis of the problem and their proposed remedy are too unbalanced and insufficient. Material capitalism is far more than a crisis of motivation. Many other factors contribute to the failings of traditional capitalism. Relying on a critical mass of business people to shift upwards their spiritual intelligence is naïve and simplistic.

Compassionate Cannabis

Members and staff of BCCCS at its thirteenth birthday celebration. Dwight joined the BCCCS on the recommendation of his doctor, and he now sits on the non-profit organization’s board. Founded in 1997, the BCCCS is the longest-running medical cannabis dispensary in the Americas, and one of the largest in Canada. Conditions like Dwight’s are why most patients come to the BCCCS – they need safety-tested, high-quality medicine with education on effective use. The BCCCS model is holistic, based on a price-subsidized Wellness Centre, where members receive treatments in ten different healthcare practices, from reiki to nutritional counselling.

Cannabis can be helpful with confronting addictions such as heroin, cocaine, speed, pharmaceuticals, and alcohol. The BCCCS subsidizes medical cannabis for its members with a number of low-income strains. The BCCCS works closely with contracted growers to check all supplies carefully for contaminants. A Vancouver lab works with the Society to make sure there are no molds, mildews, or toxins in their cannabis. A variety of products are available such as dry cannabis, hashish, edible products like cookies, alcohol-based tinctures, and topical applications.

Compassion clubs such as the BCCCS exist in a legal grey area. Canada’s federal Senate Special Committee on Illegal Drugs commended the BCCCS as the best model of providing medical cannabis.

Licensed Producers & Legalization: Surging Numbers, Crony Capitalism, & Acquisitions – Cannabis Life Network

As of writing, there are 91 licensed producers in Canada with a backlog of over 400 applications, and the already-licensed producers are taking advantage while their would-be competitors are stuck in bureaucracy. Between 2016-2017, Health Canada licensed almost five times as many producers, and 2018 has seen seven licensed producers so far. Emerald Health Farms is the latest, getting theirs yesterday, but investor fatigue has been on the rise a.s more and more producers get licensed and go public. To line up supply deals for both medical and recreational cannabis. Keep in mind that currently, LP weed is medical, but with the recreational market estimated at two to three times the size of the medical market, you can bet the licensed producers are doing everything they can to get a piece of that bigger pie.

As Canada marches towards cannabis legalization, we are seeing examples of crony and predatory capitalism, as former cops and politicians are suddenly opening their own cannabusinesses and large LP’s try to buy up all of their competition. Aurora Cannabis received final approval for its takeover of CanniMed. Cannabis activists who fought for legalization are worried by the monopolistic behaviour and profit-over-people mentality of some of these licensed producers. Medical cannabis is mail-order only, which means that no cannabis storefronts or dispensaries can sell it. Cannabis laws vary from province to province, and even city to city in some cases.

Ontario has left its door open to receiving cannabis from all sizes of producers from all across the country, whereas Quebec seems like it will only be supplied by six large producers. In BC, recreational cannabis will be sold at a mix of private and public stores, but the Liquor Distribution Branch will handle online sales.

Delingpole: Happy Birthday, Karl Marx. Not.

If you mean Stalin and Chairman Mao,they didn’t kill millions for Communism, they killed millions to stay in power and indifference to human suffering. Although Marx’s acolytes will never accept it, Stalin was not perverting his hero’s vision. Violence had formed part of Marx’s worldview from the very beginning. ‘There is only one way in which the murderous death agonies of the old society and the bloody birth throes of the new society can be shortened, simplified and concentrated,’ wrote Marx in 1848, ‘and that way is revolutionary terror’. Here is Marx a year later, addressing his conservative adversaries: ‘We have no compassion and we ask no compassion from you,’ he writes. ‘When our turn comes, we shall not make excuses for the terror. The truth is that Marx’s vision was inherently violent.

It’s about anti-logic: the kind, you might almost say, that collapses under the weight of its own contradictions. It’s about ignoring the obvious truth, for example, that if a troublesome intellectual like Marx had had to live under any of the totalitarian regimes he inspired – Stalin’s Soviet Union, Mao’s China, Pol Pot’s Cambodia, etc – he would quickly have found himself dead in a ditch with a bullet in the back of his head, or, at best, in a mental institution. Still, it was good to learn from Sandbrook’s piece that this appalling man didn’t have it easy in his life. Even as he was working on three volumes of Das Kapital, he was complaining to friends about the ‘carbuncles on my posterior and near the penis, the final traces of which are now fading, but which made it extremely painful for me to adopt a sitting and hence a writing posture’. In his darkest moments, the man who called for a world revolution spent his time attacking the pus-filled boils on his bottom with a cut-throat razor.

This conglomerate is compromised of 25 booming companies fully registered in the United Kingdom. These are social Enterprise companies that aim at making available basic services to the most disadvantaged communities in and around the globe begining with Uganda with head offiçe at Kitintale, Kampala. The compassionate Capitalism philosophy used by development channel is relatively new to Africa and Uganda in particular. Simply put, it’s where you get paid for making a purchase. Starting with Uganda as the base in Africa, Charles Lambert, the founder of this organisation and chairman of foreign investors in Uganda, has stimulated the local population by opening up the opportunity to become a shareholder in this conglomerate through a one time risk free investment.

How this works:Through the one time purchase of the amazingly unique NoDropout iPad,at only 1,008,000Ugx, you get two after-sale benefits freely from the company. This opportunity is opened up to a limited number of individuals. Besides being a shareholder, members will be opened up to various services offered by each individual company within the conglomerate. Students will have the opportunity to earn an income after accomplishing tasks which will be sent to them on the app being designed and unique to Development Channel. There are also teacher programs, single parent services, travel services and opportunities, startup capital financing with no collateral, house construction services just to mention but a few.

Development channel is also going to be among the largest employers in Uganda by making available 5000 jobs in the call center being established in Bukoto, Uganda. Hurry to take up this risk free investment opportunity and earn a consistent monthly income while the opportunity lasts.

Capitalism Is Good and Good for You

Fr. Sirico: Faith and free markets work well together. Similarly tedious but necessary is the duty of defenders of free-market capitalism to point out to friends on the left that, no, we do not believe in the Gospel of Gordon Gekko, either. The case for a free economy must be made, as Arthur Brooks has recently written in National Review. Father Sirico’s defense is partly autobiographical.

From that moment, Sirico continued to think about what kind of society he really did want and what part free markets played in it. As Sirico returned to his childhood Catholic faith, he realized a definite compatibility between the vision of humans assumed by free-market economics and the vision he had been taught in the catechesis of his youth. Made in God’s image, man is a free being who is creative and in mutually dependent relationships with others. Unlike the leftists he was leaving, Sirico realized that justice was indeed important – but so were mercy and charity. The first is that in contrast to Catholics on the left who imply that Democratic budgets are the natural outgrowth of the Nicene Creed, Sirico is not claiming a dogmatic status for any particular belief about free markets; he is only noting congruities between faith and free-market reasoning.

Capitalism may be the system that produces the most material wealth. What makes Sirico’s defense of a free economy all the stronger is his consistent acknowledgment that a functioning free market neither immanentizes the eschaton, making heaven on earth, nor makes a society virtuous or whole. Homo economicus may be a useful abstraction for certain economics problems, but the human capital of love, loyalty, and sacrifice is the kind of capital required for a successful capitalism.

Hope Springs Eternal: Conscious Capitalism In The Cannabis Industry

Unlike any other industry, entrepreneurs in the field of cannabis have had to overcome legal barriers and social stigma in order to pave the road toward a healthier, more sustainable, prosperous future. As we discussed during our interview with Quddus last month, social responsibility is a driving force for many cannabis entrepreneurs who often risk a lot to enter a controversial industry with the eternal hope that, some day, the barriers will be gone. Nowhere is that more evident than in the hemp industry. Now that more states are embracing hemp regulation, hemp is offering new hope for farmers to capitalize on its potential for lucrative returns. It’s providing doctors and scientists with opportunity to transform the field of medicine and save lives with new cures where conventional pharmaceuticals have failed.

It’s also providing a new generation of innovators with opportunity create sustainable industry by replacing dangerous pharmaceuticals with natural therapies and toxic petrochemicals with a cost-effective, carbon neutral raw material. Not only can hemp drastically reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, it also has remedial applications for restoring carbon, remediating toxic waste and protecting our precious forests, water tables and natural resources. When asked why they risked their own careers, financial security and personal freedom to enter the field of cannabis, chances are most of the industry’s entrepreneurs will say it’s because they believe in its potential to make the world a better place. Most will tell you that it’s the most gratifying career shift they have ever taken. Both are conscious capitalists who entered the realm of cannabis to improve lives and make a difference.
