What is Crony Capitalism?

1 John 3:17 If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God abide in him?

By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. Deuteronomy 15:7If there is a poor man among your brothers within any of the gates in the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you are not to harden your heart or shut your hand from your poor brother. Proverbs 14:31He who oppresses the poor taunts their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors Him.Proverbs 21:13Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too shall cry out and receive no answer. James 2:15Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.

Homeowners insurance is a practical investment to help protect you, your family and your property in the event of unforeseen and unexpected losses. Traditionally, it’s associated with fire damage, burst or leaking pipes, or stolen property, but occasionally it covers unusual events that make for sensational news stories and viral videos. Here are four claims homeowners never thought would happen to them.1. Bear B&BBears are notoriously curious and intelligent creatures that also have an acute sense of smell. Keep doors and windows on ground floors closed and locked while cooking or if you leave the house.

A bear can easily get through the screen of an open window or manipulate a lever-like door handle to enter your home and cause significant damage. If it had hit your home homeowners insurance would’ve covered it.3. Your homeowners insurance will cover the entire house, not just the contents inside, if it is stolen. Fore!Golf is a leisurely pastime enjoyed by millions in the U.S. It involves strolling across greens and riding in golf carts, so its slow pace may seem low-risk, but it can actually be quite dangerous.

According to an article in Golf Digest magazine, nearly 40,000 golfers are admitted to emergency rooms annually after being injured while playing, most by errant golf balls and flying club heads. Recreational golfers can also cause a lot of damage to personal property. If you live on a golf course, your house has probably been hit many times by errant shots – breaking windows, damaging roofs and leaving divots in exterior walls.

Homelessness and Capitalism: Some Untold Truths

According to the survey in the 2018 Point-in-Time Count of homeless people in San Diego County, the four main reasons for becoming homeless are: Loss of Job; Money Issues; Cost of Housing, and Other. While not necessarily deliberate, the debasing of homeless people benefits a system that is threatened by people who, voluntarily or not, opt out of it. People who end up homeless whether or not it is their fault, are used as examples of the dreadfulness of the condition. People who would never think of getting involved in politics or activism, suddenly become NIMBY zealots when it comes to keeping homeless people out of their community. That’s how repulsive homeless people have become.

It’s impossible to cook a meal on the street and healthy prepared food is expensive, so most homeless people rely on the high carb and fat meals distributed by good Samaritans and faith-based services. Because faith-based organizations often fill the void left by the lack of political will to help homeless people, it is not uncommon for homeless people to submit to religious proselytization for access to food and shelter. NIMBY people, still safely housed with their granite kitchen counter-tops, wall-size TVs and three-car garages packed with junk, will use that same religiosity to expound that their success is the result of their own hard work. NIMBY people smugly report the unwanted presence of poor folks in fast food joints, public restrooms, parks and parked cars. People must enthusiastically participate in a system rigged against them, or face the ultimate degradation of having absolutely nowhere to be.

Housed people think that homeless people are suffering the consequences of poor choices. The truth is that wealthy people make poor choices too.

How Capitalism and Racism Support Each Other

Capitalism’s supporters use and benefit from a racism whose practice and consequences should be blamed on capitalism itself. Racism’s persistence where the capitalist economic system prevails raises the question of the connection between capitalism and racism. Racism persists in no small part because its benefits to capitalism outweigh its costs. Capitalism’s history nonetheless keeps exhibiting both the idea of race and racism. The evidence marshaled by, among others, Manning Marable in How Capitalism Underdeveloped Black America certainly documents capitalism’s subordination of many African Americans.

Had the heavy burdens of recurring business cycles been distributed roughly equally or randomly across societies where capitalism prevailed – threatening and frightening everyone – those oppositional movements might well have gathered the broad support needed to consign capitalism to an early demise. In their struggles to displace slavery and feudalism as societies’ prevalent pre-capitalist economic systems, supporters of capitalism had often promised that it would differ from those systems by guaranteeing everyone liberty, equality and brotherhood or solidarity. Capitalism thus always faced a basic legitimation problem. Some conservatives and right-wingers further legitimate capitalism by reframing their racism. Of course, capitalism is not the only cause or source of racism, but ignoring or minimizing its role only perpetuates racism.

Racism persists in no small part because its benefits to capitalism outweigh its costs, or at least those costs capitalists have to bear. Its supporters use and benefit from a racism whose practice and consequences they blame exclusively on others but never on capitalism itself.

People Are Less Selfish Under Capitalism

My student described how exasperated she felt hearing the claim that capitalism leads to a survival of the fittest mentality. Among broad segments of society, the belief that capitalism teaches us to be so self-interested that we become uncaring about the welfare of others seems to be accepted as truth. We can only be considered selfish and violent in comparison to a utopian society in which no violence or cruelty takes place – a somewhat unfair comparison considering that there is no evidence of such a society as ever existed. Utopias may be imagined to be more altruistic than capitalist societies, but capitalist societies are more generous than real-world collectivist societies. Contrary to collectivism, capitalism widens our circle of compassion to include strangers.

The evolution of capitalism has been in the direction of more trust and transparency, and less self-serving behavior; not coincidentally, this evolution has brought with it greater productivity and economic growth. Instead, it’s taken place because the benefits of trust – that is, of being trusting and of being trustworthy-are potentially immense and because a successful market system teaches people to recognize those benefits. The real triumph of capitalism in the 19th and 20th centuries was that trust was woven into the basic fabric of everyday business. The rise in altruism that Marsh observes has occurred concurrently with the rise of capitalism. To do business, we learn to trust strangers and to be trustworthy to strangers.

The more capitalism, the more compassion and altruism towards strangers. There is a brotherhood of humanity; and capitalism – not collectivism – shows the way.

Are the Poor More Compassionate?

GREG GUTFELD, CO-HOST: So, according to a new study, the poor are more compassionate than the un-poor. I guess by this logic, we should re-elect President Obama because we now have more poor people than ever, and that could only be good because they’re good. The culture of compassion doesn’t explain why a lot of crime is poor on poor. Forty-four million people are on food stamps right now. A lot more great people under the Obama administration.

MARSHALL: Well, you can, but obviously, you can’t – obviously according to the study from Berkeley, because the poor people don’t have the money. Rich people have money and I think we’re going to get -. The people who give money, I’m guessing a lot of them are rich. Every time that the left – sorry, Leslie – but the left gets the right to sit around and talk about who is better, rich people or poor people. Poor people identify with people who are poor, down and out because they are poor, they have been poor.

In this short paper, Jesse Norman MP argues that Britain needs to return to real capitalism after more than a decade of crony capitalism. Michael Oakeshott was, it has been said, ‘the greatest political philosopher in the Anglo-Saxon tradition since Mill – or even Burke’. He is best-known for his distinction between ‘civil’ and ‘enterprise’ association, for his attack on rationalism in politics, his philosophy of history and his characterisation of the rule of law.

Compassionate Capitalism Archives

Pay attention to the soul of your business or you might miss incredible opportunities. Business is the most pervasive and influential force on the planet today. Its activities transcend national and international borders. Its activities are not unduly constrained by financial, political, cultural, ethnic, or religious concerns. The net of this is that business, as a prevalent and important force, has a moral responsibility to guide, enhance, value, and nourish the existence of all that it encounters.

In the world today, the absolute opposite of this occurs. Business today seldom assesses the efficacy of its activities through the lens of anything but profit. Traditional capitalism forgets an important variable, that of happiness. The true purpose of business is to uplift the experience of existing. It is not to produce ever-cheaper goods and services.

Compassionate capitalism is an economic system meant to make a lot of money, help a lot of people, and have a lot of fun. It is not to keep an avaricious and toxic economic model afloat and it is certainly not to make a profit.

Socialism is NOT Compassionate & Why This Should Matter to Christians

Christians should care about politics because, ultimately, we care about people. Government has an increasingly large influence on the lives of people, thus we cannot ignore politics. What we encounter in discussing societal issues today with Christians is that many think socialism is good. Socialism is government mandated activities or government control of assets. When the government redistributes wealth it even hurts the people it is trying to help!

Every time the government gets involved in something, in the long run it hurts the economy. Socialism reduces the incentive to innovate and produce. Rights are God-given to personhood rather than something conferred by government. America’s Declaration of Independence explains that liberty-that is, freedom from government interference-is also a right. So liberals who say that something like government health care is a right in fact have it backwards.

Government interference into health care tramples on liberty and thus tramples on our rights! We are not arguing that government has no role to play in society.

Utilitarian Ethics

Happiness is not an ethic, and no quantity of Utilitarianism having claimed that happiness is ethical will ever make happiness an ethic. Some men have been virtuous, and though the men may have also been happy, the happiness was not the virtue. For happiness to exist, there first must exist the components that combine to create happiness. Although a similarity of components may give rise to happiness in different individuals, the components will vary relative to each individual. The man whose foundational nature is one of love, his happiness may nascent from the combination of love, compassion, and the opportunity to give his love and compassion to the world.

The man whose foundational nature is one of greed, his happiness may nascent from the combination of greed, deceit, and the opportunity to accumulate wealth without regard of the hardships and suffering imposed on the world. The happiness of Utilitarianism did not focus on the elements that combine to create happiness, nor did Utilitarianism give attention to discussing how the elements might harmonize or disharmonize, and so it is reasonable to theorize that Utilitarianism was written without a knowledge of the nature of happiness. Within Utilitarianism there is no clarification of what Utilitarian Ethics might be other than the weighing of what actions might result in an individual’s emotion of happiness. The choice for correctness may be for its own end, and though the inward standard may arrive into existence through the logic of choosing the correct choice, still there are possible and necessary additional components that must be for their own end as well, and it is from the combining of correct thoughts and behaviors that an end-product might arise, including that of happiness, but happiness ought not to be the goal, but rather the unintentional product. If a person desires happiness then the person must first self-create the necessary qualities within him/herself that are sufficient to combine into creating the sensation of happiness, and the person’s bliss will not be a self-suggested self-convinced belief that s/he is happy, but rather the happiness will come into existence on its own, and it will be a true happiness.

Happiness is composed of specific elements unique to each individual and circumstance, and since the elements are unique to each individual, then no rule of law or philosophy can become a singular judge of happiness. Though it is not possible to now know what Mill might have had in mind when he promoted the Utilitarian view, there are possibilities of reasons why the happiness philosophy may be concluded as being useful.

Illuminations: Kellner

Forced to flee from Nazi Germany in 1933, Fromm settled in the United States and lectured at the New School of Social Research, Columbia, Yale, and Bennington. In the late 1930s, Fromm broke with the Institute of Social Research and with Escape from Freedom began publishing a series of books which would win him a large audience. Documenting some of the strains and crises of individualism, Fromm attempted to explain how alienated individuals would seek gratification and security from social orders such as fascism. Fromm popularized the neo-Marxian critiques of the media and consumer society, and promoted democratic socialist perspectives during an era when social repression made it difficult and dangerous to advocate radical positions. 7 The key theoretical essays outlining the Institute’s materialist social psychology were published in the Zeitschrift fur Sozialforschung by Erich Fromm. Although historical materialism tends to assume the primacy of economic forces and interests in individual and social life, while the psychoanalytic focus is on instinctual and psychological forces, Fromm believes that they can be fruitfully synthesized.

Psychoanalytic theories, Fromm suggested, which abstract from study of the ways that a given society socialized its members into accepting and reproducing a specific social structure, tend to take bourgeois society as a norm and to illicitly universalize its findings. For Fromm, natural instincts are part of the base of society, and he believes that our understanding of human behavior and social processes will be enriched by reciprocal knowledge of how society molds and adapts instincts to its structures, and how human beings shape and change their environments to meet their needs. Such a merger of Marx and Freud will immeasurably enrich materialist social theory, in Fromm’s view, by providing analysis of the mediations through which psyche and society interact and reciprocally shape each other. Fromm then discusses Freud’s theory of oral, anal, and genital characters, and how specific social structures produce and reward certain types of character traits while eliminating others. To begin, Bachofen provides insights, Fromm believes, into how woman’s nature develops from social practices; specifically, how the activity of mothering produces certain nurturing, maternal character traits associated with women, thus anticipating recent feminist theories of mothering.

In Fromm’s reading, Bachofen points out the relativity of existing societal relationships and institutions such as marriage, monogamy, private property, and other bourgeois social forms.

Pacific Views: Can Capitalism Be Compassionate?

Recently there has been a national discussion in India about how to create a more vibrant and equitable economy. The election that threw out Atal Bihari Vajpayee was largely seen as the rural voters striking back at the politicians that favored the urban voters and especially the expanding high tech industry. So the big question now is how can the wealth be spread across a broader cross-section of Indians and how India build a middle class that can be the stable foundation for a viable democracy. One Indian entrepreneur, Narayan Murthy, founder of global software giant Infosys, believes that India needs to harness capitalism with a real face of compassion in order to create a positive future for the country. When Murthy talks about compassionate capitalism, he backs up his words with action that shows he really means what he says.

Although he is a very successful businessman, he voluntarily limits his own salary to under $50,000 per year and donates a good proportion of his company’s profits to charity. The current Republican defintion is the same as Mussollini’s defintion of fascism, a few large corporations running the show. The progressives idea of Capitalism is probably Eutopian, that is unrealistic; it dosen’t take into account greed, a natural thing. Maybe capitalism can be compassionate and somewhat equalizing, but we’ll never know under Bush. Facism, not democracy and capitalism, is his legacy for the United States.

Key Characteristics of Conscious Leaders

Now she wants to take a look at some key characteristics of conscious leaders. All were leaders who fulfilled a purpose and vision that served the greatest good by empowering and elevating others to a higher plane. In the book Conscious Capitalism, authors John Mackey and Raj Sisodia note that conscious leaders have high analytical, emotional, spiritual and systems intelligence. They also have an orientation toward servant leadership, high integrity and a great capacity for love and care. As a coach, I have observed conscious leaders in action and the impact they have on their organizations.

Based on my experience with coaching and leading, as well as insights gained from studying leadership research and great leaders, I have come to recognize that conscious leaders tend to share certain characteristics. They transcend ego for the greater good of the organization and humanity. To lead in such a way requires courage, faith and the conscious decision to boldly go where perhaps you have never gone before. Conscious leadership isn’t esoteric or available to a select few. We can think big and take practical steps to boldly step into our highest potential as leaders.

The world needs more enlightened leaders who can change the world for the better, today and beyond. To continue reading on this subject, go to Simple Practices to Become a Great Leader.

Difference Between Mitosis and Meiosis

Meiosis and Mitosis describe cell division in eukaryotic cells when the chromosome separates. In mitosis chromosomes separates and form into two identical sets of daughter nuclei, and it is followed by cytokinesis. Basically, in mitosis the mother cell divides into two daughter cells which are genetically identical to each other and to the parent cell. Metaphase- alignment of chromosomes at the metaphase plate. Telophase- de-condensation of chromosomes and surrounded by nuclear membranes, formation of cleavage furrow.

Meiosis is a reductional cell division where the number of chromosomes is divided into half. Gametes formations occur in animal cell and meiosis is necessary for sexual reproduction which occurs in eukaryotes. Meiosis influence stable sexual reproduction by halving of ploidy or chromosome count. Anaphase I – shortening of microtubules, pulling of chromosomes toward opposing poles, forming two haploid sets.5. Telophase I – arrival of chromosomes to the poles with each daughter cell containing half the number of chromosomes.

Meiosis II – second part of the meiotic process with the production of four haploid cells from the two haploid cells. Meiosis- reductional cell division and the number of chromosomes is divided into half; it is essential for sexual reproduction, and therefore it occurs in eukaryotes.

Capitalism Is Good and Good for You

Fr. Sirico: Faith and free markets work well together. Similarly tedious but necessary is the duty of defenders of free-market capitalism to point out to friends on the left that, no, we do not believe in the Gospel of Gordon Gekko, either. The case for a free economy must be made, as Arthur Brooks has recently written in National Review. Father Sirico’s defense is partly autobiographical.

From that moment, Sirico continued to think about what kind of society he really did want and what part free markets played in it. As Sirico returned to his childhood Catholic faith, he realized a definite compatibility between the vision of humans assumed by free-market economics and the vision he had been taught in the catechesis of his youth. Made in God’s image, man is a free being who is creative and in mutually dependent relationships with others. Unlike the leftists he was leaving, Sirico realized that justice was indeed important – but so were mercy and charity. The first is that in contrast to Catholics on the left who imply that Democratic budgets are the natural outgrowth of the Nicene Creed, Sirico is not claiming a dogmatic status for any particular belief about free markets; he is only noting congruities between faith and free-market reasoning.

Capitalism may be the system that produces the most material wealth. What makes Sirico’s defense of a free economy all the stronger is his consistent acknowledgment that a functioning free market neither immanentizes the eschaton, making heaven on earth, nor makes a society virtuous or whole. Homo economicus may be a useful abstraction for certain economics problems, but the human capital of love, loyalty, and sacrifice is the kind of capital required for a successful capitalism.

Hope Springs Eternal: Conscious Capitalism In The Cannabis Industry

Unlike any other industry, entrepreneurs in the field of cannabis have had to overcome legal barriers and social stigma in order to pave the road toward a healthier, more sustainable, prosperous future. As we discussed during our interview with Quddus last month, social responsibility is a driving force for many cannabis entrepreneurs who often risk a lot to enter a controversial industry with the eternal hope that, some day, the barriers will be gone. Nowhere is that more evident than in the hemp industry. Now that more states are embracing hemp regulation, hemp is offering new hope for farmers to capitalize on its potential for lucrative returns. It’s providing doctors and scientists with opportunity to transform the field of medicine and save lives with new cures where conventional pharmaceuticals have failed.

It’s also providing a new generation of innovators with opportunity create sustainable industry by replacing dangerous pharmaceuticals with natural therapies and toxic petrochemicals with a cost-effective, carbon neutral raw material. Not only can hemp drastically reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, it also has remedial applications for restoring carbon, remediating toxic waste and protecting our precious forests, water tables and natural resources. When asked why they risked their own careers, financial security and personal freedom to enter the field of cannabis, chances are most of the industry’s entrepreneurs will say it’s because they believe in its potential to make the world a better place. Most will tell you that it’s the most gratifying career shift they have ever taken. Both are conscious capitalists who entered the realm of cannabis to improve lives and make a difference.

Even Stevens Makes Capitalism-With-a-Cause Work

Addressing nationwide food insecurity while creating a thriving restaurant business should be a Herculean task, but Michael McHenry tackles formidable projects several times a week. As the president of Even Stevens Sandwiches, McHenry exudes an unfailing optimism that’s carried the hip sandwich shop to six states with 20 locations-with many more scheduled to open in 2018. Craft sandwiches, a local vibe and a charitable cause have propelled Even Stevens to build an organization that employs hundreds and serves millions. Even Stevens opened its first location in downtown Salt Lake City in 2014 and introduced the concept of donating one sandwich for every sandwich sold. McHenry has an extensive background in the restaurant industry.

He worked for 15 years in brand development, concept and operational performance before partnering with Even Stevens owner Steve Down to create the first restaurant in the industry that can correlate revenue with social impact. It took less than three years to sell and donate a million sandwiches, and by the end of 2017, Even Stevens had donated over two million sandwiches to more than 70 nonprofit organizations. The organizations place the order, often a $2,500 value, and the food is drop-shipped to the door with Even Stevens picking up the bill. Following a close second to the compassionate capitalism aspect of Even Stevens is McHenry’s enthusiasm for team development. Even Stevens donates around 100,000 sandwiches a month, and McHenry says overcoming challenges has contributed to the ongoing success of the brand.

Each of the eight Even Stevens locations in Utah works with merchants from that area to provide a catalyst for the business community. McHenry says his job is to be a voice for social change, to find artisans in the food industry, to partner with nonprofits that are tackling food insecurity, and to find new neighborhoods where the sandwich shop can create a sustained impact.

Socialism, Capitalism, and the Bible

These evangelicals of the Left are convinced that the biblical ethic obliges them to condemn capitalism and endorse the politics of statism and economics of socialism. Now we must examine the three major economic systems that compete for attention: capitalism, socialism and somewhere between, the hybrid known as interventionism or the mixed economy. One dominant feature of capitalism is economic freedom, the right of people to exchange things voluntarily, free from force, fraud, and theft. There are degrees of socialism as there are degrees of capitalism in the real world. Generally speaking, as one moves along the continuum of socialism to capitalism, one finds the following: the more freedom a socialist allows, the closer his position is to interventionism; the more freedom an interventionist allows, the closer his position is to capitalism.

Capitalism then should be understood as a voluntary system of relationships that utilizes the peaceful means of exchange. Even if we fail to notice any other contrast between capitalism and socialism, we already have a major difference to relate to the biblical ethic. Critics of the market try to shift attention away from their own embarrassing problems to claims that capitalism must be abolished or restricted because it is unjust or because it restricts important human freedoms. If these claims were true, they would constitute a serious problem for anyone anxious to show that capitalism is compatible with the biblical ethic. Capitalism should be thought of as a system of voluntary relationships within a framework of laws which protect peoples’ rights against force, fraud, theft, and violations of contracts.

Capitalism is a mechanism that allows natural human desires to be satisfied in a nonviolent way. What capitalism does is channel that desire into peaceful means that benefit many besides those who wish to improve their own situation.

Capitalism With a Heart

They justify corporate philanthropy, like donating to the United Way, not because it’s virtuous but because it buys public good will and thus contributes to the company’s bottom line. To hard-core free-marketeers, the corporation’s only mission is to generate profits for shareholders. Mackey defines his company’s mission as improving the health and well-being of everyone on the planet. Before taking the company public, he told investors that he was going to devote 5 percent of the profits to philanthropy, so they can’t complain now that he’s robbing them. Nor can Google’s shareholders, because its founders also warned investors of their philanthropic plans.

As Katie Hafner reported in The Times, they’ve given $1 billion in seed money to Google.org, and set up the philanthropy as a for-profit organization so it can work with venture capitalists, start companies and use any profits to finance further endeavors. It’s smart of Google’s founders to try using capitalist tools to save the planet; the market’s discipline should keep their philanthropy from backing too many lost causes. Still, whatever Google.org accomplishes, I’d bet that it will pale next to the social good accomplished by Google.com. The company’s founders may not have set out to help humanity with their search engine, but they have enriched countless lives by spreading ideas and connecting people. If you read Adam Smith’s famous passage about the invisible hand causing capitalists to unwittingly serve the public interest, you might conclude that Google’s founders are better off investing their time and money in improving their core business.

I don’t think Smith would have any problem with Google.org. If compassionate capitalism is a more appealing brand, if Google and Whole Foods are using philanthropy to strengthen the invisible hand, even Smith would say they’re doing good.

The Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education

In this dialogue, CCARE’s founder and director, Dr. James Doty, will ask Werner Erhard about his life’s work and how compassion has played a role. Werner Erhard is an original thinker whose ideas have transformed the effectiveness and quality of life for millions of people and thousands of organizations around the world. For nearly 50 years he has been the creator of innovative ideas and models of individual, organizational, and social transformation. His work has been the source of new perspectives for thinkers and practitioners in fields as diverse as business, education, philosophy, medicine, psychotherapy, developing countries, leadership, conflict resolution, and community building.

Erhard has created new ways of seeing things in areas where progress has stalled or where breakthroughs would make a significant difference. A majority of the Fortune 100 companies and many foundations and governmental entities have used his ideas and models. Fortune magazine’s 40th anniversary issue, in examining the major contributions to management thinking, recognized Erhard’s ideas as one of the major innovations of the last few decades. In recognition of his humanitarian work in the U.S. and around the world, in 1988 Erhard was awarded the Mahatma Gandhi Humanitarian Award.

Since 2002 Erhard has committed his time and intellectual effort almost exclusively to the academic world. Some of his recent research, writings, lectures, and courses can be accessed from his author page in the Social Sciences Research Network. More than three million people around the world have participated in the public, corporate, charitable, and academic programs and courses he has created. Erhard’s ideas were first introduced to the public through programs derived from his models, which programs included The est Training and The Forum of the 1970s and 1980s.

Zombie Apocalypse / Analysis

Common to virtually all Zombie Apocalypse tales is that, regardless of the reason zombies attack living/non-infected people, they never attack other zombies. Any truly large-scale zombie apocalypse is likely to demand a heavy degree of Hollywood Tactics or handling of the Idiot Ball by the military. Overwhelmingly, zombie apocalypse stories tend to fall into one of two categories of political allegory. The zombie horror can be used to make a political statement against consumer capitalism, with zombies representing the bulk of humanity as unthinking sheep. The bite of a zombie is infectious, and is always a fatal injury, even if it seems a trivial scratch. This results in the victim returning as a zombie, much to the horror of the Zombie Infectee, though this is essentially coincidental, as zombification would equally result had the infectee died of, say, rabies. It is generally the case that a single zombie is not a tremendous threat, owning largely to the previous two rules. Zombiism results only from being bitten by another zombie, though event zero created the first zombie that starts off the chain reaction. Most non-Romero zombie films prefer this convention to Romero’s, including the recent remake of Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. A zombie bite results in zombification, though the transition is slow, with the victim becoming progressively more zombie-like. Often, zombie apocalypse stories are tied with a Science Is Bad message, or an allegory about human nature. The Zombie Apocalypse is so iconic that perfectly sane people will formulate emergency survival plans in case of shambling corpses. Zombie films have an ace in the hole for directors, too.

compassionate conservativism

In is his view that the Pope seems to fear Capitalism, with the apparent ‘worship of wealth’ more than Socialism, with the inevitable worship of government. Let me start with Our Lady’s promise of a conversion of Russia. Russia has been ruled for centuries by the czars, a royalist form of government that the Western world had started to reject in the 18th century. From 1917 to 1991 Russia and its surrounding countries emerged as the imperialistic Soviet Empire with nuclear teeth. If Russia’s conversion were to eventually take place, it would have to be a complete social, economic and most importantly religious transformation. Since Mary is an important figure in Catholicism I would think that a conversion would entail that Russia rejoin the Catholic Church it left in the 11th century. At Notre Dame President Barack Obama opined in 2009 that practical atheism was the working religion of governments and by inference, economies. The pope need only to look to his own country of Argentina to see what big government interference does to a population. In the United States capitalism flourishes and all boats rise when there are logical and humane rules that limit the excesses of capitalism and promote more of the general welfare. One might even borrow George W. Bush’s phrase of a compassionate conservative into a compassionate capitalism. Government acts merely as a referee that sets fair and equitable laws that will not favor big business, big labor or big government. Maybe too many opposite currents of thought have come down the pike since then but this is the way things ought to be and that’s what we can all hope and pray for, but not just in Russia.

Media Ignorance on Capitalism Hurts Low-Wage American Workers – Dr. Rich Swier

For whatever reason – ignorance, socialist-leaning worldview or laziness – basic economics of free market capitalism seems all but impossible for most of the mainstream media to grasp. At its most foundational, capitalism functions on supply and demand and the ability of a company to make a profit meeting the demand, and the person creating the demand to have multiple supply options to create competition. Now let’s say Bob gets greedy – like many liberals tell us corporations are – and tries to sell his shoes for $60 to make a $25 profit. These capitalism concepts of supply, demand, profit and competition seems to elude most media reports, allowing people like Sen. Bernie Sanders to claim corporations are evil, gouge employees and make outrageous profits. If you are making $9 per hour and working for a company making billions of dollars in profits without any media explanation of the fuller context, this is very enticing to believe. Liberal politicians such as Sanders, and many in the media, always use the anecdote corporation that just made a huge profit, rather than actual data points. Your local liberal’s favorite evil corporation, Walmart, squeezes out a paltry 2.1 percent profit. Walmart’s profit margin is less than one-third of what it pays in taxes. A 2013 Reason-Rupe Poll found that the average American guessed the typical corporate American profit to be 36 percent – more than four times reality. The actual number is about 3-5%. The corporate profits disconnect is a combination of economic ignorance and liberal agenda. 2) Cut the number of workers, particularly full-time workers with benefits. Add more part-time workers and employ the use of technology to replace low-skill workers.

Compassionate Capitalism

Over the years, Mr. Whittaker’s Christian ecumenical humanitarian organization, Opportunity International, has lived up to its growing reputation of giving the poor an alternative to charity. Today, this non-profit group creates entrepreneurial empowerment by providing loans and job training directly to poor people at the grassroots level. By 2007, the organization plans to finance 1 million poor entrepreneurs per year; and by 2010 its goal is to finance 2 million people per year into their own businesses. 98 percent of its clients pay their loans back on time and at market-rate interest! Notions that the poor are not creditworthy are shattered by this reality. Given access to credit and capital, capitalism can be democratized. People must be able to feed themselves and their families. For the majority of the world’s hungry people, food is available. Microfinance is the jumpstart so many people need to begin the process of meeting their most basic human needs; and then, accumulated capital can be saved and invested towards purchasing a home and property to begin the process of real wealth-building. When people are economically deprived, they can be politically and culturally deprived as well. We also know that poverty represents a breeding ground for terrorism, emanating from people’s feelings of desperation. The bottom line is that we must do more to narrow that gap between the rich and poor in our world. When we tap into one of the key economic forces that have made America great, namely, venture capital to energize the spirit of entrepreneurship, and harness it with compassion in the form of credit for the working poor – we have a formula for ending chronic poverty.

Compassionate Capitalism

That’s why my daughter Sarah and others like her on the autistic spectrum are out of luck when it comes to finding jobs as adults. Beyond the safety net of SSI, ACCES-VR and other government services, young adults with ASDs have been abandoned by American society. Like many other childhood disabilities, autism generates a variety of expensive special needs services in the medical, educational, psychological and behavioral realms. Parents feed many dollars into our capitalist system in order to receive these critical services for their children. No wonder autism has generated a booming industry with: behavioral therapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, developmental pediatricians, psychiatrists and pharmacologists. The autism conundrum employs researchers and pharmaceutical companies looking for prevention, treatments and ultimately, a cure. Clearly, autism has become a billion dollar industry. Our capitalist society doesn’t provide services to young adults with autism because THEY can’t pay for the expensive therapy and treatments previously funded by their parents. Of course there are some intelligent and compassionate exceptions. According to Business Insider, two MIT graduates Rajesh Anandan and Art Schectman recently founded ULTRA Testing, a software-testing company created ESPECIALLY to hire people on the autistic spectrum. With almost 80% of adults on the autistic spectrum unemployed, ULTRA Testing can receive 150 applications in 72 hours. I’m guessing Sarah and others like her will have to settle for volunteer jobs and whatever economic crumbs are tossed in her direction-unless somehow MY networking efforts connect her with meaningful, paying work.
