Defining Economic Justice and Social Justice

Social justice is the virtue which guides us in creating those organized human interactions we call institutions. Economic justice, which touches the individual person as well as the social order, encompasses the moral principles which guide us in designing our economic institutions. The ultimate purpose of economic justice is to free each person to engage creatively in the unlimited work beyond economics, that of the mind and the spirit. Like every system, economic justice involves input, out-take, and feedback for restoring harmony or balance between input and out-take. Within the system of economic justice as defined by Louis Kelso and Mortimer Adler, there are three essential and interdependent principles: Participative Justice, Distributive Justice, and Social Justice. 

Like the legs of a three-legged stool, if any of these principles is weakened or missing, the system of economic justice will collapse. Through the distributional features of private property within a free and open marketplace, distributive justice becomes automatically linked to participative justice, and incomes become linked to productive contributions. The principle of distributive justice involves the sanctity of property and contracts. Many confuse the distributive principles of justice with those of charity. Distributive justice follows participative justice and breaks down when all persons are not given equal opportunity to acquire and enjoy the fruits of income-producing property. 

Economic harmony results when Participative and Distributive Justice are operating fully for every person within a system or institution. The harmony that results from the operation of social justice is more consistent with the truism that a society that seeks peace must first work for justice.

Review: Money, Greed, and God – Acton Institute PowerBlog

The belief that the essence of capitalism is greed is perhaps the biggest myth Jay W. Richards tackles in his new book, Money, Greed, and God: Why Capitalism is the Solution and not the Problem. Richards does however have a skill for tightly honed logical arguments, and he not only is able to defend free markets but tear lethal holes into many of the economic ramblings of the religious left. The overarching strength of Richards work is how he places the free market message into the context of Christian discussions and debate. Richards also provides an argument of sorts through narrative in his book by contrasting his youthful naïveté with his more mature adult self. 

The chapter on greed and capitalism contain some of the most thoughtful and helpful arguments particularly when he discusses the value of the entrepreneur in society. The author grasps and understands the arguments made by those who are hostile to the market and the religious backgrounds they come out of, and this helps his ability to respond. I have heard all of the myths and teachings Richards is so skilled at countering. The religious left will probably ignore this book rather than respond to many of the well thought out and ordered arguments. Richards takes on figures like Ayn Rand, who celebrate selfishness over the defense of the other. 

The moral argument of course characterizes the basis of the Acton Institute’s purpose and mission. The Acton hand print is all over this book of course because Richards penned the book during his tenure at Acton. Even if one is not inclined to believe or rally around the arguments made by Richards it offers a nice balance to much of the economic branding offered up by the popular culture and religious left of late.

Distributive Justice Principles

For Other Distributive Justice Approaches Altruism is being unselfishly devoted to the welfare of others. Communist distributive justice is when each person contributes according to ability and each person receives according to need. Democratic socialist, also known as welfare democracy, distributive justice has a system of social insurance to help people who are disadvantaged. It incorporates free-market principles in producing goods and services with general principles about compassion and concern for others. Egalitarian pluralism distributive justice is when everyone has a say in decisions and no person feels they will be injured by choices made by the group. 

The writings of John Rawls, A Theory of Justice discusses this approach to distributive justice. Laissez-faire capitalist distributive justice is when people, businesses, and corporations act based on their individual self-interest for their own benefit. Libertarian distributive justice is where each person is responsible for their own future no matter what happens. State or national capitalist distributive justice is when government operates the nation’s industries to maximize profits. State socialist distributive justice is a system where the government or a central authority controls the production of goods and services. 

Examples: The corporate buyouts of the 1990s in the United States. Utopian socialist distributive justice is when members of a community put the means of production in collective decision making structure.

Eugene Victor Debs is one of the most famous(perhaps even the most) Socialist in America. He was a union leader and a founding member of both the International Labor Union and the Industrial Workers of the World. He helped to found the American Railway Union, the largest union of it’s time. His beliefs turned to Socialism after he read the work’s of Karl Marx. Victor Berger was the man who gave him a copy of Marx’s works. 

He influenced the American Socialist Party greatly and won the nomination of it five times. This lead him to protest against the American involvement in WW1. Eugene Debs was born on November 5, 1855, in Terre Haute, Indiana to parents Jean Daniel and Marguerite Marie Bettrich Debs, who both immigrated to the United States from Colmar, Alsace, France. He dropped out of High School at the age of 14 to work as a painter. Debs became involved in the Pullman Strike in 1894, which grew out of a compensation dispute by the workers who constructed the train cars made by the Pullman Palace Car Company. 

The workers, many of whom were already members of the American Railway Union, appealed to the Union at its convention in Chicago, Illinois for support. Not many of those schooled in old-party politics have any adequate conception of the true import of the labor movement. They utterly fail or refuse to see the connection between labor and politics, and are woefully ignorant of the political significance of the labor movement of the present day.

Management advice from LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner

Justin Sullivan/Getty Mike Gamson is one of LinkedIn’s top executives. As the SVP of Global Solutions, Gamson is in charge of the global talent, marketing, sales, and learning teams, making him responsible for about half of LinkedIn’s roughly 10,000 employees. It was the end of 2008, and LinkedIn founder and chairman Reid Hoffman had replaced his chief executive Dan Nye with Weiner, who had been an EVP at Yahoo. Nye was a close friend, mentor, and former boss to Gamson, and had recruited him to the professional social network company a year earlier. On top of that, Gamson was dealing with the stress of a new baby at home coupled with constant cross-country travel. 

After a warm greeting, Weiner asked him what type of leader he aspired to be. That’s when Weiner told a parable told by the Dalai Lama. While that may sound like a stereotypical Silicon Valley CEO move, the ensuing two-hour conversation fundamentally changed the way Gamson would go on to manage. This isn’t all about feelings, Gamson explained – it’s also just good business. The two executives met to discuss how they should negotiate the deal, and Gamson asked how they could get the most out of it. 

Gamson would not reveal the client’s name but noted the relationship is healthy and still exists. That day he met Weiner – the day he initially approached uneasily – changed Gamson’s career.

Social justice

In the current global grassroots movements for social justice, the emphasis has been on the breaking of barriers for social mobility, the creation of safety nets and economic justice. Social justice is invoked today while reinterpreting historical figures such as Bartolomé de las Casas, in philosophical debates about differences among human beings, in efforts for gender, racial and social equality, for advocating justice for migrants, prisoners, the environment, and the physically and mentally disabled. Thomas Pogge’s arguments pertain to a standard of social justice that creates human rights deficits. From its founding, Methodism was a Christian social justice movement. The Pope advocated that the role of the State was to promote social justice through the protection of rights, while the Church must speak out on social issues in order to teach correct social principles and ensure class harmony. 

The encyclical Quadragesimo anno of 1931 by Pope Pius XI, encourages a living wage, subsidiarity, and advocates that social justice is a personal virtue as well as an attribute of the social order, saying that society can be just only if individuals and institutions are just. It said that the laity has the specific responsibility of pursuing social justice in civil society and that the church’s active role in social justice should be to inform the debate, using reason and natural law, and also by providing moral and spiritual formation for those involved in politics. The official Catholic doctrine on social justice can be found in the book Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, published in 2004 and updated in 2006, by the Pontifical Council Iustitia et Pax. On the other hand, some scholars reject the very idea of social justice as meaningless, religious, self-contradictory, and ideological, believing that to realize any degree of social justice is unfeasible, and that the attempt to do so must destroy all liberty. Sociologist Carl L. 

Bankston has argued that a secular, leftist view of social justice entails viewing the redistribution of goods and resources as based on the rights of disadvantaged categories of people, rather than on compassion or national interest. Social justice is also a concept that is used to describe the movement towards a socially just world, e.g., the Global Justice Movement. Integrating social justice with health inherently reflects the social determinants of health model without discounting the role of the bio-medical model.

Biography, Presidency, & Facts

Michelle Bachelet, in full Verónica Michelle Bachelet Jeria,, Chilean politician who served as president of Chile. Bachelet, then a medical student at the University of Chile, was arrested and sent to a secret prison, where she also was tortured. Although Bachelet’s family history made it difficult for her to find employment in Pinochet’s Chile, eventually she joined a medical clinic that treated victims of torture. In 2000 Ricardo Lagos, the candidate of the Coalition of Parties for Democracy, a group of centre and centre-left parties, was inaugurated as Chile’s first socialist president since Salvador Allende in 1973, and Bachelet was appointed health minister. Largely as a result of those successes, Bachelet found herself among the most popular presidents in Chilean history; however, the constitution prevented her from serving a consecutive term. 

In December Bachelet won the runoff decisively to become the first two-time president of Chile since the end of Pinochet’s rule. The common thread in those reforms was Bachelet’s belief that the free-market approach, when applied to social policy, had resulted in very uneven societal benefits and in the persistence of gaping income inequalities-even while Chile’s income per capita had risen from $4,400 in 1990 to almost $22,000 in 2013, according to the World Bank. Bachelet’s administration moved ahead rapidly, introducing dozens of bills, including a tax-reform bill, enacted in September, that increased the corporate tax rate from 20 percent to 27 percent and eliminated a large tax loophole, the so-called FUT, used by wealthy Chilean stockholders to shield corporate income from taxation. Much of the anticipated increase in tax earnings was earmarked to finance Bachelet’s education-reform bill, which included state subsidies to make public higher education free for the poorest 70 percent of Chileans, along with encouraging the creation of more public universities in lieu of private for-profit schools. In 2016, responding to widespread popular protest, Bachelet proposed that Chile’s privately administered pension system be overhauled. 

A commission created by Bachelet reported that some 44 percent of pensioners were living below the poverty level during the period 2007-14. Bachelet’s proposal called for a 5 percent increase in pension payments and for an infusion of about $1.5 billion in state funds into the system, along with an increase in employer contributions.

The Time Machine Themes

As the Time Traveler theorizes, the working class has been pushed underground for so long that it has evolved into a distinct, nocturnal species. Wells tells his Victorian audience to look at its own time, in which the industrial revolution has further divided the classes, and consider the possibility of its turning into the Eloi if capitalism continues to run rampant. One of the major social theories of the late 19th-century adapted Charles Darwin’s theories on evolution to justify 19th-century social stratification between the rich and poor. Social Darwinism ignored this idea and contended that the social environment was much like the cutthroat natural environment, and that those who succeeded were biologically destined to do so and to continue in their march to human perfection. The Time Traveler soon discovers that the advancements of civilization have enfeebled the Eloi; without any pressing requirements for survival, they have become weak, lazy, and stupid. 

While their civilization has seemingly become perfect, they have become decidedly imperfect. The changing environment may not always produce desirable changes in man, and Social Darwinism’s argument that those who succeed in a given environment are naturally superior is not valid. The concept of entropy states that systems tend toward disorder and loss of energy over time, an idea many perceive as contradictory to evolution, since evolution implies that systems grow more ordered in their complexity over time. Ultimately, Wells’s championing of entropy forms his argument against the existence of Social Darwinism; rather than becoming more perfect, we are gradually losing our energy. The White Sphinx is a curious landmark in 802,701 AD. 

The Morlocks stow the Time Machine inside its enclosed bronze pedestal, so it becomes a symbolic and literal barrier for the Time Traveler, much as the sphinx blocked the entrance for the Greek hero Oedipus. The sphinx has a direct relationship to the Time Traveler’s plight; a symbol of futurity and of man’s submission to God, the Egyptian Sphinx faces the rising sun god Ra each day in worship. The TT, on the other hand, must in some ways defy God by embracing rational science as he gains mastery over time, and he must also break into the sphinx to escape from the future and go back in time.

Charity, Compassionate Capitalism and the Alms Race

The 7th of March marks the end of fair trade fortnight; and what a noble campaign it is too, not simply serving to allow indifferent middle class westerners to drop a couple of coins in a pot, but actually a way of addressing some of the pitfalls of our trade system in a way that promotes fair remuneration for hard work in the world’s most impoverished countries. The sort of indifferent charity that the fair trade campaign seeks to undercut is very much an ongoing, prevalent part of our society that despite all of its pretences must be challenged in a very particular way. We can see Žižek’s logic here; of course these billionaires can give up their cash for world hunger, it’s no skin off their backs. ižek’s particular critique is much more than that. Whether certain figureheads for capitalism have a conscience or not is quite beside the point, what is important here, for Žižek, is that capitalism still has its underlying logic, and that is the ruthless pursuit of profit. The charity element is a way to conceal the truth, a way to appease guilt, or at least to be perceived as appeasing guilt. Though cynically we can take a sound guess that charity is often used as a way of deflecting guilt, it also maintains the existing systematic gap between rich nations and poor nations. Though fair trade operates at roughly the same logic it is a way of taking farmers out of their poverty that relies on the mobilisation of interest groups and people, not the guilt-ridden exploration by fat cats, engaged in what we can safely say is now an alms race. Charity may well be the means by which the rich West pretends to do something in order to sleep at night, but that doesn’t mean it should stop because as a consequence some change is made. Simply giving money isn’t enough, so until the systemic inequality between nations has ended, people-motivated initiatives like fair trade are the only means we have, just let us not get too surprised when odious corporations like Nestle jump on the bandwagon.

VIDEO: A Conversation on Capitalism, the Climate and Justice

There was a packed house at the historic Riverside Church last night where Michelle Alexander and Naomi Klein participated in a conversation about the incompatibility between Capitalism, the Climate and Justice. I attended this event, hosted by Union Theological Seminary at the historic Riverside Church in downtown Manhattan. The Spirit of Justice is a conversation about what it will take to birth a new America, a nation in which every life and every voice truly matters. The last presidential election was a painful reminder that it is dangerous to view American history as a slow but steady march towards greater freedom, justice, and equality for all. One thing is clear: Since the days of our nation’s founding, there have always been people who have courageously embraced and embodied a spirit of justice. People of all colors, backgrounds, and walks of life have, in various ways, shown up in American history as revolutionaries, challenging us to reimagine what dignity, justice, and equality ought to mean and forcing us to reconsider who should be considered worthy of our collective care, compassion, and concern. While some may wish to return to a time when most Americans had few rights and little hope for justice, The Spirit of Justice aims to amplify the voices of modern-day revolutionaries – artists, activists, scholars, healers, teachers and more – who are committed to moving forward in new ways with a keen understanding of the political history and moral dilemmas which brought us to this moment in time. For her part, Naomi Klein spoke about growing up to not be a part of the war machine. Klein also spoke of her father being raised in a very leftist/socialist family of and how her grandfather was a key union organizer in the famous Disney animators’ strike of 1941. Overall, I was hoping for a conversation that was more hard hitting and that would relay a wake up call to the audience reflecting the true state of emergency we really are in.

Human Nature, Anarchy, and Capitalism

What is government but the greatest of all reflections on human nature. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on the government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself. Minimalist government guarantees that only those who lack ethical standards will thrive, because they will do anything to get ahead. Of course, the opposite extreme of maximalist government – as practiced most prominently by tin-horn third-world megalomaniacs – also causes everything to go to hell. Those in government are subject to the same imperfections of human nature,the same greed, as everyone else. The spirit of encroachment tends to consolidate the powers of all the departments in one, and thus to create whatever the form of government, a real despotism. The fear of these men was not first of all the damage that free men could do in private life, but the great damage, the tyranny, that could be done when fallible men are given too much power through the reins of government. If Classical Liberal principles are indeed about abolishing rather than preserving the disabilities of the state of nature, with a sharp eye to the dangers of trusting too much power into the fallible, interested, greedy human hands of those in government, then the objections of John, and perhaps of Gray and Nozick, are answered. The defense of capitalism even without appeal to purely economic truths, can proceed in the same manner as the defense of limited government before the forms of economic life even became an issue. Distrust of human nature but trust in government betrays an incoherence whose bitter fruit is necessarily corruption and tyranny, however lofty and deceptive the rhetoric by which power always masks and rationalizes itself.

Conscious Capitalism: A Mechanism for Prosperity

Companies that practice conscious capitalism benefit from putting their employees first. The Container Store, REI and Joie de Vivre have shown this to be true, even as the lagging economy has pushed other companies to downsize. At The Container Store, employees are prioritized over customers and shareholders. It’s a core company principle that influences all business decisions. Full-time employees earn an average of $46,000 per year, which is 50-100% higher than the retail store average. The company’s most ambitious commitment since the economic collapse in 2008 was to retain all of its employees. To safeguard jobs, Kip froze salaries and 401(k) matches, brokered better deals with suppliers and worked with employees to help them reach their sales targets. His strategy relied on the company’s core asset-its employees-and drew on the foundation of trust between company and employee. “If you really and truly put the employee first, they’ll take care of the customer better than anybody else and ultimately the shareholders and other stakeholders benefit as well.” Sales were down just half as much compared to other housewares retailers and the company met its usual 10% profit margin. Rather than reducing pay, benefits or hours for part-time employees, the company asked all salaried staff to accept a pay freeze, or even reduction. I’ve written before about Joie de Vivre founder Chip Conley’s approach to business: Take your largest and most expensive asset, your employees, and use it to build your company.

When a plague broke out, Buddhism was charged with angering the Gods. This directly ties to the first diffusion of Buddhism into Tibet when King Trisong Detson invited tantric practitioner Padmasambhava to dispel “Demonic forces” that were stopping Buddhism from Buddhism Final Exam spreading throughout Tibet. We enjoy the benefits of imperialism and the poverty, whether we want to ‘accept’ this truth or not. We Do, and the truth is, we, our former generations, have been more than happy, in moral superiority, to support politicians and capitalists, who prop up despots, who prop up and maintain through military and police terror, to keep the infrastructures, through petro dollars and free trade, that Cause poverty. We should be Appalled, there Was a time, in the west, where Christians, were socialists, where Christians, fought the class structure of both slavery and imperialism,. Today, its ho hum, lets just give a little, and feel ‘good’ about our offerings. Ever think, of changing anythingto rid the world of poverty, and What? Put those ‘savages’ equal with us! Oh my, couldn’t do that could we,. No, we Can’t rid the world of poverty or injustice we need to do more than just offer a band aid,. I do know this, there is NO EXCUSE, for us, in any way, even accepting, poverty,. No, I do not agree, that we don’t have a responsibility, to end poverty,. Same with us, doesn’t matter, if we can end poverty or not, what Does matter, is that we lay down our lives. We can’t even, take care of the poor homeless women with children in THIS country, but oh we are so good and noble in demanding no abortion and no birth control and controlling sexuality,. These are common elements which connect all human communities and constitute the basis of peace, security and friendship. 7 The divine religions pay attention to all aspects of human life, including obedience to God, morality, justice, fighting oppression, and endeavor to establish just and good governance. Prophet Abraham called for Oneness of God against Nimrod, as Prophet Moses did the same against Pharaohs and the Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammad did against the oppressors of their own time. Waiting with patience for the rule of goodness and the governance of the Best which is a universal human notion and which is a source of nations’ hope for the betterment of the world. They will come to put an end to war and aggression and present the entire knowledge as well as spirituality and friendship to the whole world. The bright future for the mankind will come. Long live love and spirituality; long live peace and security; long live justice and freedom.
