Buddhist responses to environmental concerns

As many religious people view it, Buddhist reality is profoundly ecological, and Buddhism itself is an ecological religion. It powerfully expresses human identification with nature. Buddhists believe that all things, including humans, exist by their interrelationship with all other parts of nature To think of one’s self as isolated from the rest of nature is be unrealist. Buddhist teachers and masters constantly remind us of the importance of living in tune with nature and respecting life. Buddhist precepts direct the faithful to seek a right livelihood, an essential dimension of which is concern for the life of all creatures.

This is the first of the five precepts of Buddhist life and a major principle of Jainism. In practice, Buddhists believe that it is the act of killing or hurting an animal which is harmful, but not the eating of meat that someone else has provided. Note that the Buddhist king Asoka the Great established hospitals for both human and animals. Compassion is the basis for a balanced view of the whole world and of the environment. Wanton destruction upsets the vital balance of life.

Climate change is caused by over-consumption of fossil fuels, loss of soil, and excessive herds of livestock. 4.A search of the Amazon.com data base shows the following books on Buddhist responses to the environment:At least, it should.

Q&A: What is biblical social justice?

In our Mission Essentials series, last week, Dorli Gschwandtner described how, in some parts of the world, evangelism, compassionate ministry and social action are necessarily so intertwined that they would not be viewed by local Nazarenes as separate in any way. We will continue to wrestle with this topic in the coming weeks after the year-end holidays. Check back in January for the latest installment in this topic of Mission Essentials. Bible studyYou can explore this topic with your small group or Sunday school by accessing a six-lesson video study guide called Seek Social Justice: Transforming Lives in Need, featuring the J.V. Morsch Center for Social Justice at Trevecca.

Download the lessons and video guide for free at www. Seeksocialjustice.com, or purchase a copy at LifeWay Christian online bookstore. Mission EssentialsMission Essentials is an original series produced by Engage magazine to refresh Nazarenes globally in our shared understanding of what it means to participate in God’s mission to the world. New articles, contributed by voices from all six world regions in the denomination, are published in Engage throughout each month from August 2011 through March 2012. Find all the articles organized into an archive by clicking the Mission Essentials logo on the right-hand of the front page.

Capitalism vs. Socialism: A Crab Cannot Birth A Bird

Here’s an old Ga proverb to nudge us in the correct direction: Kaa Fɔɔɔ Loflɔ. That is, one cannot expect a crab to give birth to a bird. You also cannot expect a capitalist nation to act in a socialist way. For instance you cannot expect a nation that claims to be capitalist to endorse, and enforce, a minimum wage for all. If it does, the nation is not capitalist!

That nation can call itself something else, but it is not capitalist. There’s also the flip-side of the Ga proverb: Kaa Fɔɔɔ Loflɔ. If one encounters a baby bird, one can conclude with certainty that the baby bird is an offspring of birds, not crabs. If one encounters a baby crab, it is the offspring of crabs, not birds. Let’s examine and correctly identify the nation that claims the most that it loves capitalism-the United States.

Socialism being somehow un-American or some sort of foreign import is intended to confuse the masses and those who like to believe that the US is practicing capitalism. America now enjoys the full support of both major parties on the following: Social Security, public housing, public power developments, legal protection for collective bargaining and other attributes of the welfare state. Look a little deeper and you would pay homage to the old Ga proverb that says: Kaa Fɔɔɔ Loflɔ.

Capitalism and Free Markets are One Gigantic Lie

Distributive Justice Principles

For Other Distributive Justice Approaches Altruism is being unselfishly devoted to the welfare of others. Communist distributive justice is when each person contributes according to ability and each person receives according to need. Democratic socialist, also known as welfare democracy, distributive justice has a system of social insurance to help people who are disadvantaged. It incorporates free-market principles in producing goods and services with general principles about compassion and concern for others. Egalitarian pluralism distributive justice is when everyone has a say in decisions and no person feels they will be injured by choices made by the group.

The writings of John Rawls, A Theory of Justice discusses this approach to distributive justice. Laissez-faire capitalist distributive justice is when people, businesses, and corporations act based on their individual self-interest for their own benefit. Libertarian distributive justice is where each person is responsible for their own future no matter what happens. State or national capitalist distributive justice is when government operates the nation’s industries to maximize profits. State socialist distributive justice is a system where the government or a central authority controls the production of goods and services.

Examples: The corporate buyouts of the 1990s in the United States. Utopian socialist distributive justice is when members of a community put the means of production in collective decision making structure.

Eugene Victor Debs is one of the most famous(perhaps even the most) Socialist in America. He was a union leader and a founding member of both the International Labor Union and the Industrial Workers of the World. He helped to found the American Railway Union, the largest union of it’s time. His beliefs turned to Socialism after he read the work’s of Karl Marx. Victor Berger was the man who gave him a copy of Marx’s works.

He influenced the American Socialist Party greatly and won the nomination of it five times. This lead him to protest against the American involvement in WW1. Eugene Debs was born on November 5, 1855, in Terre Haute, Indiana to parents Jean Daniel and Marguerite Marie Bettrich Debs, who both immigrated to the United States from Colmar, Alsace, France. He dropped out of High School at the age of 14 to work as a painter. Debs became involved in the Pullman Strike in 1894, which grew out of a compensation dispute by the workers who constructed the train cars made by the Pullman Palace Car Company.

The workers, many of whom were already members of the American Railway Union, appealed to the Union at its convention in Chicago, Illinois for support. Not many of those schooled in old-party politics have any adequate conception of the true import of the labor movement. They utterly fail or refuse to see the connection between labor and politics, and are woefully ignorant of the political significance of the labor movement of the present day.

Management advice from LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner

Justin Sullivan/Getty Mike Gamson is one of LinkedIn’s top executives. As the SVP of Global Solutions, Gamson is in charge of the global talent, marketing, sales, and learning teams, making him responsible for about half of LinkedIn’s roughly 10,000 employees. It was the end of 2008, and LinkedIn founder and chairman Reid Hoffman had replaced his chief executive Dan Nye with Weiner, who had been an EVP at Yahoo. Nye was a close friend, mentor, and former boss to Gamson, and had recruited him to the professional social network company a year earlier. On top of that, Gamson was dealing with the stress of a new baby at home coupled with constant cross-country travel.

After a warm greeting, Weiner asked him what type of leader he aspired to be. That’s when Weiner told a parable told by the Dalai Lama. While that may sound like a stereotypical Silicon Valley CEO move, the ensuing two-hour conversation fundamentally changed the way Gamson would go on to manage. This isn’t all about feelings, Gamson explained – it’s also just good business. The two executives met to discuss how they should negotiate the deal, and Gamson asked how they could get the most out of it.

Gamson would not reveal the client’s name but noted the relationship is healthy and still exists. That day he met Weiner – the day he initially approached uneasily – changed Gamson’s career.

Animal’s Daily Capitalism 101 News

The growing prevalence of refrigerators is partly due to their declining cost and partly due to people’s growing incomes. In 1919, the Frigidaire was the first self-contained refrigerator. It cost $775. As the average hourly wage in 1919 was just $0.43, it took the average American 1,802 hours of work to afford this luxury appliance. Today, the standard Whirlpool French door refrigerator holds 25 cubic feet’s worth of food and drink.

According to the latest BLS statistics, it would take the average American just 57.5 hours of work to be able to afford this – now common – appliance. Even as the price of refrigerators decreased, refrigerator quality increased. The modern refrigerators have more settings, are more reliable and more energy-efficient. You can, of course, apply the same historical example to microwave ovens, cellular phones, televisions, and many more consumer items. Here’s the thing about capitalism – real, free market, non-crony capitalism – it works every time it’s tried.

There is no underlying philosophy other than liberty; there is no dogma, no set of underlying principles other than leaving people the hell alone. Capitalism in the pure form is nothing more than millions of people making up their own minds, free of outside pressure, as to how to manage their own talents, skills and resources and when and with whom to engage in voluntary trade. Capitalism is free people dealing with each other voluntarily in free markets.

A Terrifying Experiment

In 1974, artist Marina Abramović staged a performance art piece titled Rhythm 0. She stood motionless in an art gallery for exactly 6 hours. To the side stood a table bearing dozens of objects, each selected for their associations with pain or pleasure: a whip, honey, grapes, a feather, knives, lipstick, a camera, a scalpel, a rose, a gun and a single bullet. Audience members were modest and timid at first, repositioning her arms, using the items nervously. One participant put a bullet in the gun and pointed it at her head, and held it there, finger on the trigger, until another audience member eventually pushed the gun away.

Throughout the performance, Abramović remained passive. At the end of the six hours, the curator announced that the performance was concluded. Abramović stood up, tears in her eyes, blood dripping from her neck, and walked towards the audience. Nobody wanted to confront the active, animated version of the passive figure they had been abusing. Humanity is cruelest when presented with a passive victim, and that’s why would-be oppressors first seek to silence their targets.

As Abramović’s performance 40 years ago shows, society will always do its worst to a passive victim. When the abusers find that their victim is no longer a passive object, that she’s stepping forward to confront them face to face, their taste for confrontation suddenly vanishes.

What are the negative effects of capitalism

The negative effects of greenhouse effect is very well known among people as global warming. Global warming is a recent phenomena of the 20th and the 21st century. The adverse effects of global warming start from temperature rise to melting of polar ice caps and submerging of the islands and coastal areas under water. All that water again heats up and produces condensation, floats to other parts of the world in clouds, and drops down like rain. There is a global climate change from that repeated compounding weather pattern.

On land, if pollution and deforestation is not controlled and the greenhouse effect keeps going we could see temperatures rise by another degree in the next hundred years. Earth will be a giant aquarium with all landmasses under water. Making freshwater from saltwater for supplying our world’s drinking water is helping. Bringing saltwater inland supplies fresh fish, faster than having to pollute our environment by using fishing vessels. Maybe tapping into our own oil reserves, growing our own sustainable environment without electrical, industrial, or chemical factors, or finding other uses for water rather than letting it flood us to extinction, can be researched.

The continuous technological advancement that the world has today have actually contributed a lot to global warming. Some of these turns into pollution rather than actual environmental help.

Home Depot Founder: Pope Francis’ Criticism Of Capitalism Will Scare Away Rich People – ThinkProgress

Neither Langone nor Dolan, who appeared on the network separately, revealed the identity of the donor in question. Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naïve trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system. To sustain a lifestyle which excludes others, or to sustain enthusiasm for that selfish ideal, a globalization of indifference has developed. Almost without being aware of it, we end up being incapable of feeling compassion at the outcry of the poor.

As Elizabeth Stoker points out, the Pope’s point is fundamentally theological, not political, and thus policy differences between capitalism in Argentina and in American are irrelevant. The idea that possessing significant wealth inherently makes it harder to behave morally is a bedrock part of Christian ethical thought. In a well-known passage from the New Testament, a rich man asks Christ what he must do to fully follow God’s law.

Can Capitalism Be Compassionate?

The global economy can be confusing and terrifying. Mr. Eanfar’s work is based on over 20 years of unique experience in economics, financial technologies, blockchain/cryptocurrency development, artificial intelligence, and military and government affairs. Three key points in the book deal with issues of defining value, following a vision, and managing innovation. Value: Mr.

Eanfar notes that money is not value itself; it represents value. Rather than focusing on money alone, he advises organizations to focus on theway value flows through their stakeholder ecosystems, which benefits all parties in the long run. Innovation: Artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, and other technological innovations can be used for good or ill. Mr. Eanfar dedicates a chapter of the book to the impact of artificial intelligence [AI] on government and the economy.

It’s much more fashionable to attack Adam Smith these days than to read him. Yes, he favored economic liberalism, which wasn’t exactly in style in his time. There are two main drivers behind Smithian liberalism, neither of them cold or calculating. The foundation of Smith’s moral theory is the impartial spectator theory. Smith is well known for being an ardent free trader.

The second driver of Smith’s brand of market capitalism is compassion for the poor. Liberalism properly understood – free markets, free trade, free migration, etc. Creates more wealth more quickly than any other economic system. In Smith’s time, the average person worldwide made around $3 per day. Today, in countries that have embraced liberalism, you can make $100 a day and consider yourself middle class.

Rejecting liberalism means forcing the poor to miss out on the Great Fact. Smith favored liberalism because it is not only moral, it makes life better for the poor.

Seems like the Pope Has Conservative Paul Ryan Rattled

When 1.3 million Americans lose their unemployment benefits on Saturday, they can thank Rep. Paul Ryan. Friends say the man who once worshipped Ayn Rand now takes Pope Francis as his moral role model. It’s true that while knuckle-draggers like Rush Limbaugh attack the pope as a Marxist, Ryan has praised him, which I guess takes a tiny bit of courage since normally Republicans don’t like to buck the leader of their party. Beltway journalists would have us believe Ryan’s love for the guy from Argentina is triggering genuine new interest in helping the poor.

I admit, I have been immune to Ryan’s various efforts to brand himself as a bright and innovative Republican over the years – and I continue to be. Now we’re supposed to believe Ryan is going to deliver an anti-poverty agenda as soon as the spring. Ryan’s prescription for the poor is, and always has been, a dose of discipline. Woodson apparently finds Ryan a one-man enterprise zone for restoring his national profile. When asked what Ryan has done tangibly for the poor, the Republican came up with one word: neckties.

Apparently, according to Woodson, Ryan sent neckties to a classroom of teenagers after one admired his while he was visiting. In the spirit of the holiday season, I have to admit there’s something a little bit touching about Ryan’s insistence that the GOP needs an anti-poverty agenda. I have no doubt Pope Francis would support extended unemployment benefits, and a host of other policies to make life easier for poor people and help them find genuine opportunity.

Spiritual Capitalism

Dana Zohar and Ian Marshall, who wrote the book, Spiritual Capital: Wealth We Can Live By, are a fascinating, couple married to each other. Marshall is a Jungian-oriented psychiatrist and psychotherapist. The authors argue that material capitalism, the kind that predominates in America’s corpocracy, is unsustainable, depleting our natural resources, creating political and social instability, eroding our moral standards, and degrading the very meaning of life in terms of its deepest values and aspirations. Maybe their examples unwittingly help to validate their assertion that material capitalism is in a state of crisis. There is much about Zohar and Marshall’s views and ideas with which I agree, such as their view that the capitalism prevailing today is unsustainable and thus needs to be transformed, not totally dismantled.

The authors are creative thinkers who forced me repeatedly to think outside my own relatively narrow paradigms. At the same time, the authors’ analysis of the problem and their proposed remedy are too unbalanced and insufficient. Material capitalism is far more than a crisis of motivation. Many other factors contribute to the failings of traditional capitalism. Relying on a critical mass of business people to shift upwards their spiritual intelligence is naïve and simplistic.

Compassionate Cannabis

Members and staff of BCCCS at its thirteenth birthday celebration. Dwight joined the BCCCS on the recommendation of his doctor, and he now sits on the non-profit organization’s board. Founded in 1997, the BCCCS is the longest-running medical cannabis dispensary in the Americas, and one of the largest in Canada. Conditions like Dwight’s are why most patients come to the BCCCS – they need safety-tested, high-quality medicine with education on effective use. The BCCCS model is holistic, based on a price-subsidized Wellness Centre, where members receive treatments in ten different healthcare practices, from reiki to nutritional counselling.

Cannabis can be helpful with confronting addictions such as heroin, cocaine, speed, pharmaceuticals, and alcohol. The BCCCS subsidizes medical cannabis for its members with a number of low-income strains. The BCCCS works closely with contracted growers to check all supplies carefully for contaminants. A Vancouver lab works with the Society to make sure there are no molds, mildews, or toxins in their cannabis. A variety of products are available such as dry cannabis, hashish, edible products like cookies, alcohol-based tinctures, and topical applications.

Compassion clubs such as the BCCCS exist in a legal grey area. Canada’s federal Senate Special Committee on Illegal Drugs commended the BCCCS as the best model of providing medical cannabis.

What is compassionate capitalism

Compassionate silence very well may be the truest form of compassion we can muster. The minute we open our mouths we run the risk of judgment and scorn, if not implicitly so then very possibly run the risk of what we say being inferred as judgment or scorn. Jane Austen, in Pride and Prejudice use the phrase at least twice to describe Darcy’s compassionate silence for Elizabeth and the new age meditations of manifestation it is compassionate silence that is listed as the very first step to manifesting ones dreams. As brutal and uncaring as the universe can seem, indeed its steady march towards total destruction or endless expansion of coldness and darkness would make it seem as a brutal place and yet surely the universe must be compassionate for it is truly silent on our pain and suffering.

Less than twelve months after students named Andrew Paquin faculty member of the year, the administration of Colorado Christian University dismissed the popular professor. Paquin believes his concerns about free enterprise led to the administration’s May decision. A former U.S. senator, Armstrong joined the suburban Denver college in 2006. Paquin, hired the year before Armstrong, assigned books by Jim Wallis and Peter Singer in his classes.

His ministry, the 10/10 Project, funds microloans for Kenyans to start their own businesses. Like Colorado Christian, most evangelical colleges and universities expect professors to adhere to confessional tenets. Few adopt statements on political or economic systems.

Official Post from Richard Seymour: I.One of the paradoxes of social life in late capitalism is that, even as more and more people abandon certain types of drug – alcohol, tobacco, ecstasy, sex – addictions are on the rise. The angry self, the anxious self, the sad self and then there’s the compassionate self. We head to a workshop which explores the power of cultivating compassion in those who hear voices, and in their therapists. FREE Healing Voices screening including panel discussion with subjects Oryx Cohen and Dan Sullivan tomorrow in Troy, New York starting at 6pm! Brought to you by Mental Health Empowerment Project, Inc. …

Alleged quote by Churchill: on being a socialist or conservative

Unquote 1.My version of gardening is to maintain a web page of quotations. If a man is not a socialist by the time he is 20, he has no heart. If he is not a conservative by the time he is 40, he has no brain. Mark goes on to provide many similar sayings from a variety of sources. Any man who is not a socialist at age 20 has no heart.

If he had not become a Communist at 22, I would have disowned him. If he is still a Communist at 30, I will do it then.

Compassionate Capitalism

This podcast is part one of a conversation with David Meltzer, Co-Founder and CEO at Sports1Marketing. David is an executive, author, and humanitarian best known for his work in the field of sports marketing. He is a featured speaker at conferences, corporate meetings, seminars, and other events along with being featured in The New York Times, Sporting News, Fox Business, and Bloomberg. At Terranea Resort in Los Angeles, RevThink’s Tim Thompson and Joel Pilger lead a Creative Entrepreneurs conference on BULLETPROOFING PROFITS. Knowing that being our topic, we recognized our audience might show up thinking we were going to talk only about money.

Much to everyone’s surprise, we revealed that profits in a creative firm are not about money, but rather about CHOICES and maintaining CONTROL of your business. In David’s talk, he provided us with break from all the talk of numbers plus a terrific dose of inspiration. Sharing his ideas from his books – one titled Connected To Goodness and the other titled Compassionate Capitalism – David’s message featured his stories of success, failure, redemption, and purpose.

Conscious Capitalism Dallas

Recognizing that every business has a purpose that includes, but is more than, making money. By focusing on its Higher Purpose, a business inspires, engages and energizes its stakeholders. Recognizing that the interdependent nature of life and the human foundations of business, a business needs to create value with and for its various stakeholders. Like the life forms in an ecosystem, healthy stakeholders lead to a healthy business system. Human social organizations are created and guided by leaders – people who see a path and inspire others to travel along the path.

Conscious Leaders understand and embrace the Higher Purpose of business and focus on creating value for and harmonizing the interests of the business stakeholders. They recognize the integral role of culture and purposefully cultivate Conscious Culture. This is the ethos – the values, principles, practices – underlying the social fabric of a business, which permeates the atmosphere of a business and connects the stakeholders to each other and to the purpose, people and processes that comprise the company.

Why You Love Capitalism

The purpose of government is not to create products. If you thought about it for a few moments, you’d realize you don’t want the government involved in just about anything private business can do. Government agencies don’t have to please anyone. Just a few years ago, summoning a private driver in a few minutes who would take you where you wanted to go was truly a service available only to the wealthiest people. Until Uber came around, if it started to rain in, say, Manhattan and you wanted a grab a cab, good luck.

Raise prices to incentivize more Uber drivers to hit the road. Ride-in-the-rain problem solved. If you wanted to, say, find out if individual homeowners were making their homes or apartments available for a few nights, you’d have to scour internet postings. No thanks to government which, more often than not, just gets in the way. Because the government’s knee-jerk reaction is to regulate and control everything it can regulate and control.

Cities across the world are putting up barriers to slow down or shut down services like Uber and Airbnb. Rulemaking may be the only area where the government shows creativity. In sum, almost everything you enjoy using is a product of capitalism; almost everything you can’t stand is a product of big government.

Mourning Modernity: Literary Modernism and the Injuries of American Capitalism

In Mourning Modernity, Seth Moglen argues that American literary modernism is, at its heart, an effort to mourn for the injuries inflicted by modern capitalism. He demonstrates that the most celebrated literary movement of the 20th century is structured by a deep conflict between political hope and despair-between the fear that alienation and exploitation were irresistible facts of life and the yearning for a more just and liberated society. He traces this conflict in the works of a dozen novelists and poets – ranging from Eliot, Hemingway, and Faulkner to Hurston, Hughes, and Tillie Olsen. Taking John Dos Passos’ neglected U.S.A. trilogy as a central case study, he demonstrates how the struggle between reparative social mourning and melancholic despair shaped the literary strategies of a major modernist writer and the political fate of the American Left.

Mourning Modernity offers a bold new map of the modernist tradition, as well as an important contribution to the cultural history of American radicalism and to contemporary theoretical debates about mourning and trauma. He has recently published a new edition of T. Thomas Fortune’s Black and White: Land, Labor, and Politics in the South.

Capitalism legal definition of capitalism

Encourages the reader to think long and hard about alternatives to unfettered capitalism. Almost out of nowhere, he concludes about how the Left’s academics and politicians must develop an alternative police science in order to use policing and security to make a transition from capitalism. Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild, the CEO and founder of the Coalition for Inclusive Capitalism. Says, We are pleased to share the findings from the Conference on Inclusive Capitalism. For a synthesis of both the moral and the practical arguments for capitalism.

I recommend George Reisman’s magnum opus Capitalism. One concerns the goal of strategies responding to the harms of capitalism. Strategies can either envision transcending the structures of capitalism. Or simply neutralizing the worst harms of capitalism. Consider these attempts and so-called newfangled forms of capitalism.

From the capitalist by Hartmut Elsenhans argues that a lack of perception of the progressive aspects of capitalism. I leave my read of the book convinced that Weber got it wrong, and that capitalism.
