Lead with Mercy

Nothing is forcing the person in power to show mercy to the person subject to his power. The world of business is not about salvation it’s about the bottom-line and soft, intangible words like mercy, compassion, patience, and forgiveness don’t really have a logical place in business. In a 24/7 global business cycle, leaders don’t have time for forgiveness – they are being held accountable for results, not compassion, by boards, customers, investors, and other stakeholders. I’m confident there is a compelling case for mercy in the world of business and especially amongst the leaders of business. It is especially compelling for leaders because we set the tone for culture and behavior in our organizations. 

The case for leading with mercy is made even more compelling when you consider the common traits or characteristics often found in successful leaders. These characteristics do not guarantee successful leadership nor are they found in all successful leaders. A significant body of research as summarized in Bruce Peltier’s, The Psychology of Executive Coaching concludes that many successful leaders bear these traits that I associate to leading with mercy. Integrity: If I were asked to pick one trait most greatly associated with leading with mercy I would choose integrity. From leading by example, delegating responsibility, to encouraging risk taking the foundation is trust in the leader. 

Vision: The capacity of a leader for organizational vision and to articulate that vision is a common trait amongst successful leaders and as we will discuss, clarity of vision is a key component of the Lead With Mercy framework. Phrases like compassionate management, managing compassionately, and conscious capitalism are rolling off the tongues of chief executives like LinkedIn’s, Jeff Weiner; and the blogs of leading business magazines like Harvard Business Review.

The Divine Mercy Chaplet

Disabled people and the inclusive society: or the times they really are changing

The United Nations itself estimates that the above quote applies to some 500 million disabled people across the World and given that the UN Declaration has been in existence for 50 years, it is clear that large numbers of disabled people have suffered human rights abuses for a long time. To return to the theme of the exclusion of disabled people rather than our creation, while a comprehensive history and anthropology of disability has yet to be written, it is clear from what evidence we do have that disabled people are not excluded from all societies. In our own society disabled people have and continue to face all these forms of exclusion. Society had to do something about disabled people and it did; not being shy about using all the forms of exclusion mentioned above. A noble aim which has been somewhat tarnished in its implementation: while the Government intends to lop £750 millions off benefits for disabled people immediately, so far only 50 disabled people have found jobs under the new deal. 

The problem is that the Government’s plans to get disabled people into work are focused around 2 initiatives: a small number of special schemes and job coaches for individual disabled people. At a conservative estimate, there are a least one million disabled people of working age who are employable and such trifles are unlikely to have any significant impact on the unemployment rate amongst disabled people. Disabled people in Britain will recognise an earlier version of this policy when in the late 1960s and early 1970s the Disablement Income Group and the Disability Alliance proposed a national disability income available as of right to all disabled people. This proposal was not simply attacked on the grounds of cost but disabled people themselves argued that such a proposal would serve as a basis for the further exclusion of disabled people from other parts of society; if disabled people didn’t need jobs, why bother to educate them or given them the means to travel – so the argument went. Many disabled people fear that our disappearance from the future will not be a matter of progress but one of bitter regret, for society as well as for ourselves. 

We can be confident about this because disability studies, in Britain at least, is developing as a genuine partnership between disabled people and the academy and as a consequence of this, the voice of disabled people will be heard far louder than it otherwise might. If nothing else it will allow the voice of disabled people to be heard in fora where otherwise it would not and I am confident that the Strathclyde Centre for Disability Research will play a role in giving the disabled people of Strathclyde a voice.

Mercy definition: Mercy is compassionate action or treatment; relief from distress; a tendency from personal character to act compassionately; to be ruthful, to show forbearance or kindness. In Scripture and in the Christian faith, mercy means the giving of grace to people who don’t deserve it. Mercy is grace’s effect on justice, and thus it is another side of justice. Through grace and mercy, God offers those who do wrong a new chance to get it right, or at least better, a new opportunity to follow Christ. Mercy is limited only by justice, which in this context is a limit to mercy for someone(s) in order that there be mercy for the rest. The word is of a piece with grace, in that God shows mercy in abundance and without cost. Every breath we draw is a gift of His love, every moment of existence is a grace, for it brings with it immense graces from Him.

The “Compassion” Racket

Our hearts automatically go out to the people of Florida, who are being battered by a series of hurricanes in rapid succession. Every year, politicians get to parade their compassion by showering the taxpayers’ money on the places that have been struck. First of all, not as many people would build homes in the path of a well-known disaster that comes around like clockwork virtually every year. His father warned him of the danger but an architect pointed out that the government would pick up the tab if anything happened to his house. Still later, the waves came in again, and this time took out the whole house. In politics, throwing the taxpayers’ money at disasters is supposed to show your compassion. The crucial fact is that a society does not have one dime more money to devote to the resources available to help victims of natural disasters by sending that money through government agencies. Even if most insurance companies are unwilling to insure people living in particularly vulnerable areas, or living in homes that are inadequate to withstand hurricane-force winds, there are always insurers who specialize in high risks – and who charge correspondingly higher premiums. If rich people want to put their mansions at risk, there is no reason why they shouldn’t pay the costs, instead of forcing the taxpayers to pay those costs. As with so many government programs that people have come to rely on, phasing out state and federal disaster relief programs would not be easy. Whether the risks are hurricanes, earthquakes, floods or forest fires, people who have gotten themselves out on a limb by taking risks in the expectation that the government will bail them out can be gradually weaned away from that expectation by phasing out disaster relief. The alternative is to keep on forcing taxpayers to be patsies forever, while politicians bask in the glow of the compassion racket by throwing the taxpayers’ money hither and yon, while the media applaud the courage of those who rebuild in the path of known disasters.

Sympathy for the Comfortable: The New Conservative Theory of Compassion

Now, Mulvaney has been installed as Donald Trump’s budget director, and his job is to try to explain to the American people why Trump’s proposed deep cuts in small-but-crucial social programs are the path to economic nirvana and social justice. What is especially interesting about Mulvaney’s approach so far is that he has decided to try to convince people that he is being “Compassionate” even as he proposes to stop feeding hungry people and take away programs on which the most vulnerable Americans rely. Mulvaney has turned out to be what we might think of as an even less impressive version of House Speaker Paul Ryan, who has been trying for years to dress up harsh cuts to the least fortunate among us as freedom-enhancing, empowering opportunities that will allow people to throw off the shackles of dependency. Perhaps more interestingly, Mulvaney’s new definition of compassion exposes a telling gap in the new conservative vision of social justice. Mulvaney takes the completely obvious point that these spending programs take tax revenue, and he then claims that “Compassion” requires that we stop the spending because some people pay taxes but do not receive anything from the programs. To be exceedingly generous to Mulvaney, maybe we can reinterpret his statement as simply a reminder that there are people who must pay taxes in order to support various programs. The one thing that is probably most widely agreed upon is that better-off people gain less utility from each dollar than worse-off people receive from the same amount. Mulvaney proves once again that there is always someone who is willing to say anything to advance the interests of the greedy people who put people like him in office. The American people recognize that the nation’s tax burden should be shared progressively, not proportionately, because some people are struggling and should not be forced even closer to starvation by paying federal taxes. Even in non-recession years, our policies should allow people like Mulvaney’s imaginary single mother in Detroit to get by at least on the little pay that they can earn-plus programs like subsidized school lunches for their kids. The big picture shows that conservatives like Trump and Mulvaney want to attack the working poor for earning income but not paying federal income taxes, but then they trot out those same working poor for sympathy because they should not be expected to pay for social programs for other people. The fact is that those social programs can be-and, at least for now, are-paid for by wealthier people who can afford to pay those taxes with much less pain than the pain that such programs alleviate.
