Competitive Enterprise Institute

It’s much more fashionable to attack Adam Smith these days than to read him. Yes, he favored economic liberalism, which wasn’t exactly in style in his time. There are two main drivers behind Smithian liberalism, neither of them cold or calculating. The foundation of Smith’s moral theory is the impartial spectator theory. Smith is well known for being an ardent free trader.

The second driver of Smith’s brand of market capitalism is compassion for the poor. Liberalism properly understood – free markets, free trade, free migration, etc. Creates more wealth more quickly than any other economic system. In Smith’s time, the average person worldwide made around $3 per day. Today, in countries that have embraced liberalism, you can make $100 a day and consider yourself middle class.

Rejecting liberalism means forcing the poor to miss out on the Great Fact. Smith favored liberalism because it is not only moral, it makes life better for the poor.

Entrepreneurs + Investors + Funded Innovation + Generational Wealth + Compassionate Capitalism

History has shown that the Greatest Wealth is Created through Entrepreneurism. Every Innovation that improves our lives came from an Entrepreneur with an idea; a strategy to succeed; and the funding to execute. The Good News: You don’t have to start a great company when you can invest in a great company and reap the same rewards as the founders. Recent regulatory changes have made that easier than ever to happen. We help Entrepreneurs and Investors create their legacy in the innovation they bring to market and the generational wealth they create.

The men and women who take the road less traveled and invest in exciting private companies before they go public, have the opportunity that few realize – create wealth, leave a legacy of innovation, and have personal pride in knowing they impacted their community with new jobs and opportunities.

Why Pope Francis wants us to stop worshipping capitalism

Pope Francis’ upcoming visit to the U.S. next week is generating huge interest and expectation. Part of that excitement is rooted in the different tone the pope has taken on a number of issues, from marriage to the role of women in the church. He has also issued a tough critique of capitalism and called for more action on climate change. We kick off our coverage of the pope’s trip, which will continue all next week, with a look at those issues from our economics correspondent Paul Solman.

It’s part of our weekly series Making Sense, which airs every Thursday on the NewsHour.

Andreas Malm: Revolutionary Strategy in a Warming World

Climate & Capitalism welcomes further contributions to this essential discussion on ecosocialist strategy for our time. In his novel The Drowned World from 1962, today often considered the first prophetic work of climate fiction, J. G. Ballard conjured up melting icecaps, an English capital submerged under tropical marshes and populations fleeing the unbearable heat towards polar redoubts. If there is any link between climate change and the kind of unrest that may issue in a full-fledged revolution, it cannot possibly be immediate.

In which everything but climate is relegated to the dead category of ceteris paribus, should be inverted: if the aim is to understand how global warming may set off discord, it must not be posited as acting on its own. Unmediated, exclusive causation cannot be posited as a criterion for the efficacy of climate change in calling forth something like a revolution, for that would presuppose an empty planet, the non-existence of human societies on earth. Climate change does not take away any of the iniquities of the regime: it is constituted as a destabilizing force in relation to them. In the report Climate Change and Labour: Impacts of Heat in the Workplace, several union federations and UN branches draw attention to what might be the most universal and the most widely ignored experience of global warming: it’s getting hotter at work. Extraction of surplus-value may still be the central pump, but the most explosive impacts of climate change will scarcely be transmitted in any straight line along its axis.

It has few adherents so far, but they do exist: in The Climate Challenge and the Failure of Democracy, Australian scholars David Shearman and Joseph Wayne Smith reject the Marxist contention that capitalism is the source of global warming and assigns all the blame to democracy. So far we have two configurations although the line between them may be difficult to draw: revolution and/or counter-revolution/chaos as symptoms of climate change. The Egyptian revolution represented an opportunity to fill such cracks in the armour and move towards comprehensive, popular adaptation to climate change. In the post-1989 ideological hangover that still affects the activist milieus making up the climate movement in the North there lingers a fetishization of horizontal direct action as a self-sufficient tactic and a reluctance to consider Lenin’s lesson: ‘The key question of every revolution is undoubtedly the question of state power.

Use enterprise in a sentence

What recommends commerce to me is its enterprise and bravery. To every type of coast there may be related a special type of occupation and even of character; the deep and gloomy fjord, backed by almost impassable mountains, bred bold mariners whose only outlet for enterprise was seawards towards other lands – the viks created the vikings. All these might pass for religious wars, and they might really be so; it needed greater ingenuity to set forth the invasion of England as a missionary enterprise designed for the spiritual good of the benighted islanders. If the enterprise were as heroic and commanding as it is protracted and unwearied! While in the interests of his canal Lesseps had resisted the opposition of British diplomacy to an enterprise which threatened to give to France control of the shortest route to India, he acted loyally towards Great Britain after Lord Beaconsfield had acquired the Suez shares belonging to the Khedive, by frankly admitting to the board of directors of the company three representatives of the British government.

At the same time negotiations took place with Great Britain for an Italian occupation of Massawa, and Mancini, dreaming of a vast Anglo-Italian enterprise against the Mahdi, expatiated in. The great Phoenician colony of Carthage, founded before 800 B.C., perpetuated the commercial enterprise of the parent state, and extended the sphere of practical trade to the ocean shores of Africa and Europe. The Portuguese, in the early part of the 17th century, were under the dominion of Spain, and their enterprise was to some extent damped; but their missionaries extended geographical knowledge in Africa. Prophetic personality now moved in a larger sphere than that of divination, important though that function be in the social life of the ancient state as instrumental in declaring the will of the deity when any enterprise was on foot. Prosecution of his literary enterprise; a hermit in his study as long as he chose, he found the most delightful recreation always ready for him at the threshold.

The free enterprise system-the greatest creator of wealth the world has known-will continue to produce the material gains we enjoy today and to reward most those who serve their fellow humans best. In 1622 the Spaniards, under Spinola, made another attempt to take the town, but were forced to abandon the enterprise after a siege of ten weeks and the loss of 1200 men.

God, Guns, Capitalism, and the Explosive U.S. Firearms Culture –

The owners of Second Amendment Sports of McHenry, Illinois, sold tickets in their raffle for the prize of an AR-15 military-grade assault rifle, which is similar to the weapon of mass destruction and death used at the Pulse nightclub. Raffle organizers eventually cancelled it not because of the outrage they received on the insensitivity of the event rather, they realized that a raffle conducted by a for-profit company might be declared illegal in their state’s judicial system. Second Amendment Sports’ insane raffle represents only the latest installment in the volatile and explosive gun culture of the United States. 300 WSM rifle with a Cabela’s 50th anniversary gun case worth $875. And maybe it’s not too late to go down to Nations Truck Sales in Sanford, Florida where three years ago they offered each customer a brand spanking new assault rifle with the purchase of a truck. For that measly sum, you can metamorphose as 250 shot shells, 100 rifles cartridges, or 250 pistol cartridges.

Just in time for the holiday season, the Scottsdale, Arizona gun club now offers its members the service of sending out their Christmas cards with pictures of family members, including infants, posing with Santa while holding pistols and military style automatic weapons, fa la la la la, la la la la. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, gun related violence has reached epidemic proportions in our country by snuffing out the lives of upwards of 30,000 people and wounding many more annually. Each year, over 100,000 people are affected in some way by gun violence. Many of the guns used in these killings reach military level weapons power, guns which currently remain legal.

For free registration, send in your confirmation to samarth. In much of the world, including India, the free enterprise system has come to be associated by many with material greed, or wealth creation for its own sake. President of the American Enterprise Institute, Dr. Arthur C. Brooks believes that supporters of the free market system need to develop a new way of addressing the big human questions of our time. Based on both empirical research conducted as an economist-as well as interactions with some of the world’s leading spiritual figures, including the Dalai Lama and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar-Dr. Brooks argues that supporters of free enterprise must make not just an economic case, but also a moral case for their ideas. Exploring the dilemma over making money and doing good, Ananta Centre presents a candid conversation between Dr. Brooks and India’s acclaimed author and commentator, Mr. Gurcharan Das on ‘Capitalism and Compassion: Why Morality Matters in a Market Economy’ Speaker : Dr. Arthur C. Top 10 Reasons To Hate Capitalism Why Is Bad 2018

Capitalism pits one another in a race to reach a fictitious goal – that of wealth. Yes capitalism is bad Because history and current events prove it is wrong and we are educated and informed. Regulations came into being because so many bad businesses were doing so many evil things to destroy other companies. I explained back in 2013 that there is a big difference between being pro-market and being pro-business. With the passage of the tax reform bill, corporations across America celebrated by passing on some of the tax savings they would receive on to their workers. It has been only a couple of weeks since President Donald Trump signed the Tax Cut and Jobs Act into law, but the legislation is already springing into action by offering the country a raise. Despite the plan containing many flaws, one part of the Republican tax bill – the corporate tax rate – is opening the wallets of Corporate America. When the GOP slashed the corporate tax rate from 35% to. These concerns did not influence significantly the actual preferences of voters. The thing is that there are no time machines to whisk us back to an earlier age so we can correct a bad decision or rephrase a careless comment.

The Compassionate Hunter’s Guidebook

Wild meat, hunted in a responsible way, is one of the most healthful, sustainable foods possible. Depending on how it is done, hunting can be as local, intimate and humane as it gets. Aside from this, it demands the hunter enter a world of awareness, wildness, life and death that as a culture we have lost connection to. The Compassionate Hunter’s Guidebook is a guide for those that come to the act of hunting with pure intentions, motivated by a desire for healthy food that comes directly from the land where they live. This practical manual suggests that hunting is not a ‘sport’ and the animals whose lives are taken are not ‘game’. Understanding your prey; Tools, techniques and preparation; The act of the hunt; From forest to table – processing, preserving and preparing your kill. A unique and comprehensive, fully-illustrated guide to the complexity, ethics and spirit of the hunt, The Compassionate Hunter is a must-read for beginning and experienced hunters alike. It will appeal to anyone who wishes to delve more deeply into the complex, humbling and ultimately profound reality of our relationship with the food that nourishes us.

Author’s new book “Compassionate Capitalism” receives a warm literary welcome

Readers’ Favorite is one of the largest book review and award contest sites on the Internet. They have earned the respect of renowned publishers like Random House, Simon & Schuster, and Harper Collins, and have received the “Best Websites for Authors” and “Honoring Excellence” awards from the Association of Independent Authors. They are also fully accredited by the BBB, which is a rarity among Book Review and Book Award Contest companies. It is an idea that society needs, but seems to always to be ignored because one of the ways capitalism is defined is greed; and greed is the problem with the current system. Greed is ruining our system and it’s going to take a concerted effort from the bottom and the top to solve this problem, and prevent our economy and our country from running off the rails. Everybody appreciates the benefits of capitalism here in America. Most of us just want those benefits to spread to all segments of society instead of just the top one percent. This book looks at our system as well as others, and suggests ways we can spread the wealth and make it work for everyone. “Compassionate Capitalism: The Intersection of Economic Growth and Social Justice is a serious look at how humanity handles wealth, security, survival, and business. This book takes a hard look at these issues, but it is written in a way that is easy to read and understand. I am not an economic expert, but I have thought about these issues and I could follow Gerard L. Hasenhuettl’s thinking on the subject and learned a lot as I read his words. The ideas are big, but simple. The solutions are elegant, but ultimately profound. Everything is organized and laid out in a way that keeps moving the reader forward. This may be a very important book.” Charlotte was a key member of two communications teams I led at Honeywell. Her analytical approach, innovative thinking and commitment to excellence were recognized and appreciated throughout Honeywell.

Grace, Mercy and Compassion

“Left with an unknowing dependence on grace in the instant of an arising desire, we very often truly do not know what to do. As frustrating and painful as the dilemma may be, there is a real beauty in it. It is precisely at those times of not knowing that we are most alive in realizing our need for grace.” “All human nature vigorously resists grace because grace changes us and the change is painful.” ’tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,and grace will lead me home. Compassion differs from mercy in that compassion is about an emotional connection. “Compassion asks us to go where it hurts, to enter into the places of pain, to share in brokenness, fear, confusion, and anguish. Compassion challenges us to cry out with those in misery, to mourn with those who are lonely, to weep with those in tears. Compassion requires us to be weak with the weak, vulnerable with the vulnerable, and powerless with the powerless. Compassion means full immersion in the condition of being human.— Henri Nouwen.”I have always found that mercy bears richer fruits than strict justice. Mercy definition: Mercy is compassionate action or treatment; relief from distress; a tendency from personal character to act compassionately; to be ruthful, to show forbearance or kindness. In Scripture and in the Christian faith, mercy means the giving of grace to people who don’t deserve it. Mercy is grace’s effect on justice, and thus it is another side of justice. Through grace and mercy, God offers those who do wrong a new chance to get it right, or at least better, a new opportunity to follow Christ. Mercy is limited only by justice, which in this context is a limit to mercy for someone(s) in order that there be mercy for the rest. The word is of a piece with grace, in that God shows mercy in abundance and without cost. Every breath we draw is a gift of His love, every moment of existence is a grace, for it brings with it immense graces from Him.

The “Compassion” Racket

Our hearts automatically go out to the people of Florida, who are being battered by a series of hurricanes in rapid succession. Every year, politicians get to parade their compassion by showering the taxpayers’ money on the places that have been struck. First of all, not as many people would build homes in the path of a well-known disaster that comes around like clockwork virtually every year. His father warned him of the danger but an architect pointed out that the government would pick up the tab if anything happened to his house. Still later, the waves came in again, and this time took out the whole house. In politics, throwing the taxpayers’ money at disasters is supposed to show your compassion. The crucial fact is that a society does not have one dime more money to devote to the resources available to help victims of natural disasters by sending that money through government agencies. Even if most insurance companies are unwilling to insure people living in particularly vulnerable areas, or living in homes that are inadequate to withstand hurricane-force winds, there are always insurers who specialize in high risks – and who charge correspondingly higher premiums. If rich people want to put their mansions at risk, there is no reason why they shouldn’t pay the costs, instead of forcing the taxpayers to pay those costs. As with so many government programs that people have come to rely on, phasing out state and federal disaster relief programs would not be easy. Whether the risks are hurricanes, earthquakes, floods or forest fires, people who have gotten themselves out on a limb by taking risks in the expectation that the government will bail them out can be gradually weaned away from that expectation by phasing out disaster relief. The alternative is to keep on forcing taxpayers to be patsies forever, while politicians bask in the glow of the compassion racket by throwing the taxpayers’ money hither and yon, while the media applaud the courage of those who rebuild in the path of known disasters.

The Capitalism Site

Under capitalism, a proper government’s fundamental responsibility is to protect the rights of the individual, by banning the initiation of force, thus making all relations between men peaceful, i.e., free from the threat of violence and fraud. Within the specialized domain of economics, a person who invests capital in a given business concern is recognized as a capitalist, regardless of whether he advocates capitalism politically, e.g. Engels, Buffet and Soros are economically capitalists. Capitalism is a political system that if based upon the wrong philosophical base, is like a towering skyscraper, built on quicksand. A philosophy today that provides a proper foundation for capitalism is Ayn Rand’s philosophy: Objectivism. The closest any country has come to pure capitalism is 19th century America. The fact that 100% laissez faire capitalism has never existed, does not mean it cannot exist, or that it will not exist in the future; laissez faire capitalism is a definite metaphysical possibility. “Capitalism has created the highest standard of living ever known on earth. The evidence is incontrovertible. The contrast between West and East Berlin is the latest demonstration, like a laboratory experiment for all to see. Yet those who are loudest in proclaiming their desire to eliminate poverty are loudest in denouncing capitalism. Man’s well-being is not their goal.” – AYN RAND, “Theory and Practice,” Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal, 136. Capitalism is the best – the ideal – theory, because to the extent that it is allowed to work, it works in practice. Children working in factories was only a transitory stage between early feudalism and capitalism. Prior to working in factories, before capitalism, many of children used to die and starve, as evidenced by the high infant mortality statistics before capitalism. If life was so great before capitalism in the “Country”, why was infant mortality so high and population numbers considerably lower before capitalism? Answer: because life was not so great until Capitalism. The intellectuals despise Capitalism because it is completely in opposition to their basic, philosophical principles. Capitalism is the system of individual rights; the intellectuals on all sides are for some form of collectivism. Capitalism is the system of individualism, self-interest and happiness; the intellectuals are for altruism, self-sacrifice, and misery. Capitalism is is a social system for living in reality; a reality which the intellectuals despise, or whose existence they deny.

I actually think it’s sort of the hidden secret of IDEO, sophisticated intervention design. I think the way that government generally works is to think, think, think, think, and then finally create legislation that brings about some change and then they say okay, we’re finished with that. What we’re working on now is the upside-down thesis-which postulates that government investment in a piece of infrastructure gets perverted and ends up not benefiting the folks it was designed for. If government had a design mentality, they would have created the Patent and Trademark Office and said, it’s not going to work the way we had hoped and we’ll tweak it again and we’ll tweak it again, and they wouldn’t feel we failed. I think that’s the mentality governments are going to have to use to a greater extent. TB: If I can just say, I think everybody is captured with the notion that we’ve got gridlock in Washington-we have to stop those Republicans or we have to stop those Democrats because if they get that thing done, then it’s done and you don’t have another shot at it. If instead the mentality was all bills are prototypes, if you had that, I think the motivation behind gridlock would go away. Tim, are there modern enlightened leaders who you’ve seen adopt rapid prototyping and design thinking? One we were talking about earlier, AG Lafley, committed to that in his first tenure at P&G, and used it not just to reform innovation at P&G but also to some degree reform a culture and extend and expand how business leaders at P&G were expected to think about their businesses and growth in their businesses and serving their consumers. I think the way we work closely with today is an entrepreneur, a very successful business entrepreneur in Peru, Carlos Rodriguez Pastor. One of the first engagements that we carried out with him was to design a new school system for Peru that’s capable of delivering high quality education at private schools but $100 a month, so middle class prices and it’s scalable. SB: Tim, what impact has Roger had on your thinking over the years? TB: When we first met, Roger was writing his book The Opposable Mind, and in the concept of integrative thinking there was a huge overlap with design thinking. I referred to it quite heavily in my book when I was talking about design thinking. It’s what got me to realize in fact that some of the most natural design thinkers in business are actually CEOs who are able to hold these tensions in their mind and yet make choices and come up with solutions that make productive and creative use of these tensions-which is so much about what design is.

The guy making your Mod pizza may once have been serving time

That guy sprinkling the anchovies on your Mod Pizza might be a two-time loser and ex-con, but that’s part of the business plan at the 150-store, fast-casual restaurant chain. “The idea of second chancesis a byproduct of the commitment we made early on to use the business as a platform to make a positive social impact,” said Mod founder and president Scott Svenson. Svenson is a millionaire a few times over, due to the success of his Seattle Coffee Company and Carluccio’s restaurant chain. Mod Pizza seems to be doing both, continuing an expansion at a time when some in the Chipotle-like fast-casual assembly-line pizza business are starting to fail. “Let’s be honest,” Svenson said in a phone interview on Friday. “We are doing this because my wife [Ally] and I have built two previous businesses. We know what gives us personal satisfaction and contentment. It’s not just going out and making another dollar. It’s the impact we’ve made and the people we’ve impacted.” Around 20 percent of Mod’s new hires have a troubled past. “We had a team member, a three-time former felon, we promoted to general manager within a year. He couldn’t imagine someone trusting him in a cash business to be in charge. Three months later, he lost a $3,000 deposit. We believe he truly lost it. He not only paid it back, he has paid us back a million times over.” “An assistant general manager had been in jail. He was cashing out, and the til was $30 short. A mistake had been made. He didn’t want to leave the company $30 short, so he took tip money to make up for the company’s loss. He denied and he was fired. If he said, ‘We were $30 short,’ we would have said that’s okay. We will make it up.” “There is a risk and that freaks people out,” he said of his enlightened capitalism. Svenson said the business grossed more than $60 million last year and was the fastest -growing restaurant chain in the U.S. in 2015, according to Technomic. The pies at Mod, depending on the market, start around $7.47 or $8.27. “If the Mod Squad member wants to buy you dinner, a milkshake or give out pizza coupons, or he or she wants to buys everyone in line dinner, they are totally empowered. It has happened.” Svenson expects to be a winner in the shakeout under way affecting the fast-casual pizza business. “Many don’t have the resources or experience to build a business.”

Quartz: What Steve Bannon Really Wants

Bannon’s political philosophy boils down to three things that a Western country, and America in particular, needs to be successful: Capitalism, nationalism, and “Judeo-Christian values.” These are all deeply related, and essential. America, says Bannon, is suffering a “Crisis of capitalism.” Capitalism used to be all about moderation, an entrepreneurial American spirit, and respect for one’s fellow Christian man. In remarks delivered to the Vatican in 2014, Bannon says that this “Enlightened capitalism” was the “Underlying principle” that allowed the US to escape the “Barbarism” of the 20th century. Since this enlightened era, things have gradually gotten worse. “The baby boomers are the most spoiled, most self-centered, most narcissistic generation the country’s ever produced,” says Bannon in a 2011 interview. He takes on this issue in more detail in Generation Zero, a 2010 documentary he wrote and directed. The film shows one interviewee after another laying out how the “Capitalist system” was slowly undermined and destroyed by a generation of wealthy young kids who had their material needs taken care of by hardworking parents-whose values were shaped by the hardship of the Great Depression and World War II-only to cast off the American values that had created that wealth in the first place. This shift gave rise to socialist policies that encouraged dependency on the government, weakening capitalism. Eventually, this socialist vision succeeded in infiltrating the very highest levels of institutional power in America. “By the late 1990s, the left had taken over many of the institutions of power, meaning government, media, and academe,” says Peter Schweizer, a writer affiliated with Bannon’s Government Accountability Institute, a conservative think tank, in Generation Zero. “And it was from these places and positions of power that they were able to disrupt the system and implement a strategy that was designed to ultimately undermine the capitalist system.” Underlying all of this is the philosophy of Edmund Burke, an influential 18th-century Irish political thinker whom Bannon occasionally references. Rather, societies work best when traditions that have been shown to work are passed from generation to generation. The baby boomers, Bannon says in a lecture given to the Liberty Restoration Foundation, failed to live up to that Burkean responsibility by abandoning the tried-and-true values of their parents in favor of new abstractions. For both Burke and Bannon, failure to pass the torch results in social chaos.

Michael Novak’s Moral Compass

When Michael Novak was writing The Spirit of Democratic Capitalism, I was fortunate to have worked as his assistant. Novak always sought diversity of views and opinions. In his vivid and splendid narrative, Novak takes hold of a turbulent economic and spiritual era in the United States in which Novak explores the complex events of the 20th century – forging into the new third millennium. With great honesty, humor, and humility Michael Novak shares his fascinating stories of a long and active life. Novak’s passion, gentle joy and zest for life is impressive. Michael Novak has been a theologian, philanthropist, and activist throughout his long life. “My dream was to write about the philosophy, the theology of American culture – and not because it was American, but because there was something different here and unique,” Novak writes. Michael Novak entered academic life after 12 years of preparing for the priesthood. Changing slowly from left to right, Novak points out how he came to see the essential truths of life – fighting poverty, advocating for human rights – as better served by an enlightened capitalism and by democratic politics than any alternative social order, especially a heavy hand of the state-run enterprise. Novak: “I witnessed with my own eyes the almost immediate results of the switch from Carter’s economic policies to Reaganomics. Entrepreneurship not only expanded dramatically, it boomed. Reagan’s incentive tax with business friendly regulatory regime gave rise to numerous small businesses, with employment soaring. The favorable climate suddenly propelled both creative innovations with the emergence of new, high technologies.” Novak’s influence and recognition rose as well. Writing as if to a very close friend, Michael Novak shows how Providence placed him in the middle of many crucial events of his time: a month in wartime Vietnam, the student riots of the 1960s, the Reagan revolution, the collapse of the Berlin Wall, Bill Clinton’s welfare reform, and the struggles for human rights in Iraq and Afghanistan. “The only way the poor will be lifted out of poverty is if they can start businesses that bring economic growth to the bottom,” Novak argues. Novak invites readers to see life as it is and can only be seen after years of contemplation, reflection, and long cumulative experience. Perhaps this is why Michael Novak’s writing is so wonderful. Michael Novak’s journey from left to right can help us find our own moral compass in an increasingly complex, global world.
