Capitalism Is Good and Good for You

Fr. Sirico: Faith and free markets work well together. Similarly tedious but necessary is the duty of defenders of free-market capitalism to point out to friends on the left that, no, we do not believe in the Gospel of Gordon Gekko, either. The case for a free economy must be made, as Arthur Brooks has recently written in National Review. Father Sirico’s defense is partly autobiographical.

From that moment, Sirico continued to think about what kind of society he really did want and what part free markets played in it. As Sirico returned to his childhood Catholic faith, he realized a definite compatibility between the vision of humans assumed by free-market economics and the vision he had been taught in the catechesis of his youth. Made in God’s image, man is a free being who is creative and in mutually dependent relationships with others. Unlike the leftists he was leaving, Sirico realized that justice was indeed important – but so were mercy and charity. The first is that in contrast to Catholics on the left who imply that Democratic budgets are the natural outgrowth of the Nicene Creed, Sirico is not claiming a dogmatic status for any particular belief about free markets; he is only noting congruities between faith and free-market reasoning.

Capitalism may be the system that produces the most material wealth. What makes Sirico’s defense of a free economy all the stronger is his consistent acknowledgment that a functioning free market neither immanentizes the eschaton, making heaven on earth, nor makes a society virtuous or whole. Homo economicus may be a useful abstraction for certain economics problems, but the human capital of love, loyalty, and sacrifice is the kind of capital required for a successful capitalism.

Hope Springs Eternal: Conscious Capitalism In The Cannabis Industry

Unlike any other industry, entrepreneurs in the field of cannabis have had to overcome legal barriers and social stigma in order to pave the road toward a healthier, more sustainable, prosperous future. As we discussed during our interview with Quddus last month, social responsibility is a driving force for many cannabis entrepreneurs who often risk a lot to enter a controversial industry with the eternal hope that, some day, the barriers will be gone. Nowhere is that more evident than in the hemp industry. Now that more states are embracing hemp regulation, hemp is offering new hope for farmers to capitalize on its potential for lucrative returns. It’s providing doctors and scientists with opportunity to transform the field of medicine and save lives with new cures where conventional pharmaceuticals have failed.

It’s also providing a new generation of innovators with opportunity create sustainable industry by replacing dangerous pharmaceuticals with natural therapies and toxic petrochemicals with a cost-effective, carbon neutral raw material. Not only can hemp drastically reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, it also has remedial applications for restoring carbon, remediating toxic waste and protecting our precious forests, water tables and natural resources. When asked why they risked their own careers, financial security and personal freedom to enter the field of cannabis, chances are most of the industry’s entrepreneurs will say it’s because they believe in its potential to make the world a better place. Most will tell you that it’s the most gratifying career shift they have ever taken. Both are conscious capitalists who entered the realm of cannabis to improve lives and make a difference.

Capitalism With a Heart

They justify corporate philanthropy, like donating to the United Way, not because it’s virtuous but because it buys public good will and thus contributes to the company’s bottom line. To hard-core free-marketeers, the corporation’s only mission is to generate profits for shareholders. Mackey defines his company’s mission as improving the health and well-being of everyone on the planet. Before taking the company public, he told investors that he was going to devote 5 percent of the profits to philanthropy, so they can’t complain now that he’s robbing them. Nor can Google’s shareholders, because its founders also warned investors of their philanthropic plans.

As Katie Hafner reported in The Times, they’ve given $1 billion in seed money to Google.org, and set up the philanthropy as a for-profit organization so it can work with venture capitalists, start companies and use any profits to finance further endeavors. It’s smart of Google’s founders to try using capitalist tools to save the planet; the market’s discipline should keep their philanthropy from backing too many lost causes. Still, whatever Google.org accomplishes, I’d bet that it will pale next to the social good accomplished by Google.com. The company’s founders may not have set out to help humanity with their search engine, but they have enriched countless lives by spreading ideas and connecting people. If you read Adam Smith’s famous passage about the invisible hand causing capitalists to unwittingly serve the public interest, you might conclude that Google’s founders are better off investing their time and money in improving their core business.

I don’t think Smith would have any problem with Google.org. If compassionate capitalism is a more appealing brand, if Google and Whole Foods are using philanthropy to strengthen the invisible hand, even Smith would say they’re doing good.

The Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education

In this dialogue, CCARE’s founder and director, Dr. James Doty, will ask Werner Erhard about his life’s work and how compassion has played a role. Werner Erhard is an original thinker whose ideas have transformed the effectiveness and quality of life for millions of people and thousands of organizations around the world. For nearly 50 years he has been the creator of innovative ideas and models of individual, organizational, and social transformation. His work has been the source of new perspectives for thinkers and practitioners in fields as diverse as business, education, philosophy, medicine, psychotherapy, developing countries, leadership, conflict resolution, and community building.

Erhard has created new ways of seeing things in areas where progress has stalled or where breakthroughs would make a significant difference. A majority of the Fortune 100 companies and many foundations and governmental entities have used his ideas and models. Fortune magazine’s 40th anniversary issue, in examining the major contributions to management thinking, recognized Erhard’s ideas as one of the major innovations of the last few decades. In recognition of his humanitarian work in the U.S. and around the world, in 1988 Erhard was awarded the Mahatma Gandhi Humanitarian Award.

Since 2002 Erhard has committed his time and intellectual effort almost exclusively to the academic world. Some of his recent research, writings, lectures, and courses can be accessed from his author page in the Social Sciences Research Network. More than three million people around the world have participated in the public, corporate, charitable, and academic programs and courses he has created. Erhard’s ideas were first introduced to the public through programs derived from his models, which programs included The est Training and The Forum of the 1970s and 1980s.

Zombie Apocalypse / Analysis

Common to virtually all Zombie Apocalypse tales is that, regardless of the reason zombies attack living/non-infected people, they never attack other zombies. Any truly large-scale zombie apocalypse is likely to demand a heavy degree of Hollywood Tactics or handling of the Idiot Ball by the military. Overwhelmingly, zombie apocalypse stories tend to fall into one of two categories of political allegory. The zombie horror can be used to make a political statement against consumer capitalism, with zombies representing the bulk of humanity as unthinking sheep. The bite of a zombie is infectious, and is always a fatal injury, even if it seems a trivial scratch. This results in the victim returning as a zombie, much to the horror of the Zombie Infectee, though this is essentially coincidental, as zombification would equally result had the infectee died of, say, rabies. It is generally the case that a single zombie is not a tremendous threat, owning largely to the previous two rules. Zombiism results only from being bitten by another zombie, though event zero created the first zombie that starts off the chain reaction. Most non-Romero zombie films prefer this convention to Romero’s, including the recent remake of Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. A zombie bite results in zombification, though the transition is slow, with the victim becoming progressively more zombie-like. Often, zombie apocalypse stories are tied with a Science Is Bad message, or an allegory about human nature. The Zombie Apocalypse is so iconic that perfectly sane people will formulate emergency survival plans in case of shambling corpses. Zombie films have an ace in the hole for directors, too.

compassionate conservativism

In is his view that the Pope seems to fear Capitalism, with the apparent ‘worship of wealth’ more than Socialism, with the inevitable worship of government. Let me start with Our Lady’s promise of a conversion of Russia. Russia has been ruled for centuries by the czars, a royalist form of government that the Western world had started to reject in the 18th century. From 1917 to 1991 Russia and its surrounding countries emerged as the imperialistic Soviet Empire with nuclear teeth. If Russia’s conversion were to eventually take place, it would have to be a complete social, economic and most importantly religious transformation. Since Mary is an important figure in Catholicism I would think that a conversion would entail that Russia rejoin the Catholic Church it left in the 11th century. At Notre Dame President Barack Obama opined in 2009 that practical atheism was the working religion of governments and by inference, economies. The pope need only to look to his own country of Argentina to see what big government interference does to a population. In the United States capitalism flourishes and all boats rise when there are logical and humane rules that limit the excesses of capitalism and promote more of the general welfare. One might even borrow George W. Bush’s phrase of a compassionate conservative into a compassionate capitalism. Government acts merely as a referee that sets fair and equitable laws that will not favor big business, big labor or big government. Maybe too many opposite currents of thought have come down the pike since then but this is the way things ought to be and that’s what we can all hope and pray for, but not just in Russia.

Media Ignorance on Capitalism Hurts Low-Wage American Workers – Dr. Rich Swier

For whatever reason – ignorance, socialist-leaning worldview or laziness – basic economics of free market capitalism seems all but impossible for most of the mainstream media to grasp. At its most foundational, capitalism functions on supply and demand and the ability of a company to make a profit meeting the demand, and the person creating the demand to have multiple supply options to create competition. Now let’s say Bob gets greedy – like many liberals tell us corporations are – and tries to sell his shoes for $60 to make a $25 profit. These capitalism concepts of supply, demand, profit and competition seems to elude most media reports, allowing people like Sen. Bernie Sanders to claim corporations are evil, gouge employees and make outrageous profits. If you are making $9 per hour and working for a company making billions of dollars in profits without any media explanation of the fuller context, this is very enticing to believe. Liberal politicians such as Sanders, and many in the media, always use the anecdote corporation that just made a huge profit, rather than actual data points. Your local liberal’s favorite evil corporation, Walmart, squeezes out a paltry 2.1 percent profit. Walmart’s profit margin is less than one-third of what it pays in taxes. A 2013 Reason-Rupe Poll found that the average American guessed the typical corporate American profit to be 36 percent – more than four times reality. The actual number is about 3-5%. The corporate profits disconnect is a combination of economic ignorance and liberal agenda. 2) Cut the number of workers, particularly full-time workers with benefits. Add more part-time workers and employ the use of technology to replace low-skill workers.

Compassionate Capitalism

Over the years, Mr. Whittaker’s Christian ecumenical humanitarian organization, Opportunity International, has lived up to its growing reputation of giving the poor an alternative to charity. Today, this non-profit group creates entrepreneurial empowerment by providing loans and job training directly to poor people at the grassroots level. By 2007, the organization plans to finance 1 million poor entrepreneurs per year; and by 2010 its goal is to finance 2 million people per year into their own businesses. 98 percent of its clients pay their loans back on time and at market-rate interest! Notions that the poor are not creditworthy are shattered by this reality. Given access to credit and capital, capitalism can be democratized. People must be able to feed themselves and their families. For the majority of the world’s hungry people, food is available. Microfinance is the jumpstart so many people need to begin the process of meeting their most basic human needs; and then, accumulated capital can be saved and invested towards purchasing a home and property to begin the process of real wealth-building. When people are economically deprived, they can be politically and culturally deprived as well. We also know that poverty represents a breeding ground for terrorism, emanating from people’s feelings of desperation. The bottom line is that we must do more to narrow that gap between the rich and poor in our world. When we tap into one of the key economic forces that have made America great, namely, venture capital to energize the spirit of entrepreneurship, and harness it with compassion in the form of credit for the working poor – we have a formula for ending chronic poverty.

Compassionate Capitalism

That’s why my daughter Sarah and others like her on the autistic spectrum are out of luck when it comes to finding jobs as adults. Beyond the safety net of SSI, ACCES-VR and other government services, young adults with ASDs have been abandoned by American society. Like many other childhood disabilities, autism generates a variety of expensive special needs services in the medical, educational, psychological and behavioral realms. Parents feed many dollars into our capitalist system in order to receive these critical services for their children. No wonder autism has generated a booming industry with: behavioral therapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, developmental pediatricians, psychiatrists and pharmacologists. The autism conundrum employs researchers and pharmaceutical companies looking for prevention, treatments and ultimately, a cure. Clearly, autism has become a billion dollar industry. Our capitalist society doesn’t provide services to young adults with autism because THEY can’t pay for the expensive therapy and treatments previously funded by their parents. Of course there are some intelligent and compassionate exceptions. According to Business Insider, two MIT graduates Rajesh Anandan and Art Schectman recently founded ULTRA Testing, a software-testing company created ESPECIALLY to hire people on the autistic spectrum. With almost 80% of adults on the autistic spectrum unemployed, ULTRA Testing can receive 150 applications in 72 hours. I’m guessing Sarah and others like her will have to settle for volunteer jobs and whatever economic crumbs are tossed in her direction-unless somehow MY networking efforts connect her with meaningful, paying work.

compassionate conservatism

As a conservative Christian, I was introduced to WORLD Magazine and Marvin Olasky in the 90’s. Olasky - one of several supposed ex-communists with a dubious past and a lying streak - talked a lot about ‘compassionate conservatism’ and the need for conservative Christians to support urban people. Yes, I voted for the first time on the premise that I was doing good for myself and my community. I did see welfare as an impediment to working and living securely. What I thought about were the kids I was working with. It didn’t lead to more secure communities through the advancement and strengthening of nuclear families, but less-secure communities. I think I believed in compassionate conservatism not only because I hadn’t yet seen the extent of economic deprivation and theft in Working Class communities of color and other abandoned WC communities. At the time, I knew and saw the desperation of my Black and Brown Working Class community and my own Working Class family, which had received government subsidies before and after my father lost his employment to privatization, alcohol abuse, and epilepsy. Welfare before the Reaganites and the New Democrats altered it was not going to work on its own because it saw money to poor families as merely a form of aid. It should have realized - as conservativism and more-compassionate liberalism certainly still fail to realize - that child-raising is work. Pregnancies are seen as interruptions from work - and thus income - rather than as a form of valuable, creative work in and of themselves.

The Experiment: Capitalism versus Socialism

The Experiment pitted the market economy of the West against the command economy of the East. The West boasted large, vibrant industries and other highly productive sectors, while dirty antiquated factories and outmoded farming methods dominated the East. About the only staple that was cheaper in East Germany were potatoes, which could be distilled into vodka, so that lower caste East Germans could commiserate better with their abundant Russian comrades. State-guaranteed health care in the East did not translate into a healthier society. In 1990, life expectancy in the West was about 3½ years longer than in the East for men, and more than 2½ years longer for women. The socialist mentality of full employment for everyone led to more women working in the East than in the West. As the education system in East Germany was deeply rooted in socialism, the state ran an extensive network of schools that indoctrinated children into the socialist system from just after their birth to the university level. While it’s true that today East Germans perform better at STEM studies than their Western counterparts, that may be explained in part by the influx of numerous poorly educated immigrants to former West German areas, and the extensive money invested in the eastern region since reunification. Even though East Germany was much better off than other Soviet satellite countries, East German socialism offered few advantages over its capitalist western counterpart. They apparently think East German socialism is preferable to West German capitalism.

Why So Little Empathy and Compassion Within American Culture?

The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling ideas; the class which is the ruling material force in society is at the same time the ruling intellectual force. I submit that neoliberal capitalist culture in the U.S. deadens feelings of social solidarity, pathologizes how we view ourselves and stunts our natural feelings of empathy and moral responsibility. The Italian Marxist, Antonio Gramsci, argued that it’s all about class and power as the ideas of the ruling class take on the everyday status of common sense, of universal truths. It would be incorrect to assume our rulers are a coven of diabolical conspirators who gather at Davos to consciously devise their wicked schemes. There’s actually a remarkable symmetry between neoliberalism’s ruling ideas and the convictions held by elites. In any event, to the extent these ideas are internalized by working people, we police ourselves, thus reducing the elite’s need for visible coercion. Make no mistake, there is nothing more dangerous to ruling class interests than people getting in touch with their inborn, wired sense of empathy and then acting as their sisters’ and brothers’ keeper. To reiterate, ideas do not have an independent existence apart from economics. Finally, exposing the class power behind culture points up the absolute necessity for basic structural changes in our dominant economic system and its empathy-enervating ideology. Of course, I don’t mean to imply that the elite’s attempt at cultural hegemony is complete.

Charles Dickens as Social Commentator and Critic

Dickens showed compassion and empathy towards the vulnerable and disadvantaged segments of English society, and contributed to several important social reforms. In his adult life Dickens developed a strong social conscience, an ability to empathise with the victims of social and economic injustices. Dickens believed in the ethical and political potential of literature, and the novel in particular, and he treated his fiction as a springboard for debates about moral and social reform. In his novels of social analysis Dickens became an outspoken critic of unjust economic and social conditions. The Novel a Repository of Social Conscience Dickens was a great moralist and a perceptive social commentator. In common with many nineteenth-century authors, Dickens used the novel as a repository of social conscience. Much radicals admired him, Dickens was never a radical author, but he was much more sensitive to social abuse than William Makepeace Thackeray, and responded readily to the concerns of the Condition of England Question. As a social commentator, Dickens saw the need for the reform of English society; he urged that the wealthy and privileged exhibit a greater humanitarianism towards the poor and the vulnerable. Dickens created a Condition-of-England novel, which directly engaged with contemporary and social issues. Conclusion Dickens as a social commentator exerted a profound influence on later novelists committed to social analysis.

The CONSERVATIVE HEART of Compassionate Capitalism

The amount of reasoned discussion and debate over the issues of greatest importance has taken a back seat to well-crafted one-liners delivered at just the right time for maximum rhetorical impact. Since the election of President Trump, many of those who disapprove of the results have taken to the streets in a tsunami of frustrated discontent while our elected officials proclaim in impassioned speeches, their ‘confidence’ in the American people to do what is right for the country-that they have ‘faith and trust’ in the citizenry to rise above the divisions and work together for the common good. He knew the majority could be wrong, and that mob rule was a very real and constant threat. So did our founding fathers, which is why they gave us a republic, not a pure democracy-and placed limits on both the majority and on the government itself. Chuck Colson tackled that issue back in 2000, shortly after the election of George Bush. In a republican form of government, the people elect representatives to govern. In an ideal republic, elected officials rise above polls and public passions and act in the best interest of the nation. Republics are also based on a constitution-a rule book, if you will-that protects the rights of individuals not only against a monarch, but from mob rule. It’s why, for example, the right to free speech can’t be voted away by a simple majority. All of this necessarily safeguards against the depravity of man.

Compassionate capitalism in the Middle Ages

Compassionate capitalism in the Middle Ages: Profit and philanthropy in medieval Cambridge. Using recently discovered documents on medieval Cambridge, we have investigated how money was made through property speculation and how the profits of successful speculation were spent. Property markets developed in medieval England as burgage plots were laid out in new or expanding towns by local landowners, with the king’s permission. Our research combines statistical analysis of medieval records with detailed analysis of the backgrounds of the individuals and institutions that developed property portfolios. We identify patterns in rents, highlight strategies used to assemble property portfolios and examine how the profits of property speculation were spent. Medieval speculators invested in a variety of properties. Property hotspots with high-rents can be identified in three parts of medieval Cambridge: at the road junction by the hospital; west of the market; and near the river just south of the hospital. Figure 2 Map of medieval Cambridge showing property hotspots. Profits from the property market were recycled back into the community through donations to religious houses, hospitals and churches. Profits from property speculation benefitted individuals, family dynasties and the urban community as a whole.

Confucian Capitalism?

After I introduce several important Confucian terms, I will attempt to illuminate where there may be contrast with contemporary Capitalist ideals, the reader may have already noticed where contrast is apparent between Capitalism and Confucianism. In so many cases, Capitalism is about profit seeking: Capitalism, it often seems, is about getting the most profit for the least amount of effort. In order to highlight this difference in ethic, I will revisit each of the six Confucian terms introduced and place them in light of Capitalism. Along the way, I will highlight how Capitalism would have to change in order to allow Confucianism to flourish. Perhaps, the harmonious society sought by Confucianism cannot exist with Capitalism in the mix. The result of following Capitalism is a completely different world view. In Capitalism, there appears to be a lack of moral servitude that is found in Confucian authoritative conduct. In order for Capitalism to exist in accordance with Xin, wealth needs to be distributed much more evenly throughout society. While Capitalism, in the form that it exists now, eventually leads to imperialism the goal of Capitalism could be set within limits to allow for a globally sustainable and morally virtuous world economy. By Confucian standards in fact, Capitalism is a path towar.

Embodied Spirituality: Compassion

Spirituality – embodied or otherwise – is merely narcissism and self-indulgence when it doesn’t involve compassion – literally, feeling with others. We cannot really expect others to be convinced that we are “Mystical” or “Spiritual” unless we put compassion into practice by helping others. The two aspects of religion go hand-in-hand: without a sense of connection there is no basis for compassion, and without the expression of compassion in the form of caring, the life of a mystic can be barren and unproductive. In a Pagan context, we might view the theological underpinnings of compassion as our view that divinity is immanent in the world, and everything carries a spark of divinity within it. My theological basis for compassion is a religious basis, but it is also a naturalistic basis. Beyond the practical aspects of compassion lies the recognition of kinship, of looking into the face of another and seeing ourselves. The ancient virtues of hospitality and reciprocity are core values for many Pagans, and these are, in many ways, related to compassion. Compassion is not only fellow-feeling for other humans, but also for animals and birds: all our relations. The Charter for Compassion would benefit from a “Green clause” to emphasise caring for the Earth and our fellow creatures. Although there is a section on their website about treating the Earth with compassion, it hits a discordant note for me, as we need to recognise that we are part of the Earth, not regard it as a separate system from ourselves.

Capitalism and Self-Care

As a person who struggles with anxiety, one of the ways I’ve shamed myself is when I believe I haven’t been productive enough. Dad would epilogue his stories with, “I pulled myself up by my bootstraps so I could give my children the life I didn’t have.” The message is clear: work hard and I can achieve anything. Has anyone noticed that being productive never includes self-care? As a person who struggles with anxiety, as a person who has several loved ones who have mental health struggles, and as a person who works in the mental health field- I see so many people be hard on themselves for not producing enough, especially if their reason for not doing so involves mental health issues. Because we are told we aren’t good enough to justify taking time away from productivity to practice self-care. “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” ~Audre Lorde. If we collectively practice self-care by taking time away from being productive, what would the world look like? What would happen? “I’m a failure for not doing the thing.” -> transforms to -> “Taking care of myself does not make me a failure.” I ask myself whether I’m practicing self-care because I need to or because I shamed myself to. Asking myself what I would say to a friend/loved one going through a similar situationthen turning those words back to myself. Telling myself it’s okay not to be productive because I am important.

No, Capitalism Is Not Ruining Your Christmas Market

Glowing Christmas lights fill the cold streets of medieval European cities with little wooden booths selling steaming hot wine and cinnamon biscuits. First off: Christmas markets are, at least in Europe, a billion euro industry. In a more detailed analysis on Christmas markets in the UK, researchers found that in the example of the city of Manchester, an average stall at a Christmas market generated £3,500 per day. Christmas markets in Brussels, Belgium, and Strasbourg, France count between 1.5 and 2 million visitors. Your local Christmas market is a money-making machine regardless of it selling candles or car insurance. The Christmas spirit is supposed to advocate for empathy and compassion, as the biblical stories describe Jesus, a poor man, who preached charity despite receiving very little of it in return. They fail to be the ones who are actually celebrated around Christmas for providing these essential opportunities to people. When there is a large company selling their products on a traditional Christmas market, many see a greedy company ruining the flair of the Christmas spirit. All it takes to see this is to think of the millions of people oppressed by socialism, like those in Venezuela, who will, this year, spend among the worst Christmas Eves they have ever witnessed. Next time you see a large coffee machine retailer or a booth advertising cleaning products at your local Christmas market, think of the people whose lives were made better through these companies.

Pros and Cons of Capitalism

Contrary to the opinion of some class warriors, the upper strata of Capitalism is not static; individuals and families rise up into it, and fall out of it, every year. Capitalism provides ever-rising standards of living and leisure time for those who work. Capitalism rests on the premise that effective competition is the best way of guiding individual efforts. Capitalism is a system in which the distribution of persons between different occupations stems from their own choices. The history of Capitalism is full of such occurrences, sometimes affecting hundreds of thousands of people at the same time. To appreciate the fantastic results of Capitalism, we must measure it by the hopes men held when it began; and there is no doubt that its success surpassed man’s wildest dreams. Intellectuals sometimes use the freedom afforded by Capitalism to nibble at its very foundations. Capitalism provides motivation to individuals and companies; it distributes responsibilities and rewards; it is a system of prizes and penalties. Capitalism is perfectly fitted to Democracy, in that it features individuals best served by being left alone, rather than those who wish to live off the state. Capitalism does not simply mean that persons may influence production by choosing beans or peas at the grocery; that a young person may choose between a vast array of career paths; that manufacturers may choose what and how they produce. Capitalism is a set of values; it is an attitude toward life; it is a civilization, and yes- it is inarguably a civilization of inequality amongst individuals and families. Unfettered Capitalism produced the incredible wealth one sees in the United States today.

John Hawkins’ Right Wing News

1) A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader. 2) I’d rather entrust the government of the United States to the first 400 people listed in the Boston telephone directory than to the faculty of Harvard University. 12) The prudent capitalist will never adventure his capital if there exists a state of uncertainty as to whether the Government will repeal tomorrow what it has enacted today. Curtis LeMay. 18) Compassion is defined not by how many people are on the government dole but by how many people no longer need government assistance. 27) Society in every state is a blessing, but government, even in its best stage, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one. 28) History teaches that war begins when governments believe the price of aggression is cheap. 29) Millions of individuals making their own decisions in the marketplace will always allocate resources better than any centralized government planning process. 31) The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, I’m from the government and I’m here to help. 32) I hope we have once again reminded people that man is not free unless government is limited. There’s a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: as government expands, liberty contracts. 39) Yet the basic fact remains: every regulation represents a restriction of liberty, every regulation has a cost.

Read This Before You Ever Debate “Capitalism” Again

Capitalism is only the private ownership of the means of production. The simplicity of this definition has given rise to several “Modifier” capitalisms: anarcho-capitalism, compassionate capitalism, crony capitalism, and free market capitalism. A more appealing form of capitalism is compassionate capitalism. Although there is no precise definition of this type of capitalism, the main idea is that, while its proponents like capitalism, they think it can lead to unpleasant excesses. On the left, advocates of a compassionate capitalism grudgingly accept capitalism as necessary and useful. The outcome of both the public-private partnerships of the Bush administration and the social consciousness and corporate responsibility of the Clinton and Obama administrations has been what people are increasingly calling “Crony capitalism.” Under crony capitalism, private owners of the means of production use the coercive power of government to advance their own interests. Another effect of crony capitalism has been the increasing power of the Washington bureaucracy to direct economic activity-undermining capitalism itself. Bringing the simple definition of capitalism into a debate is not enough. I’ve briefly presented anarcho-capitalism, compassionate capitalism, and the resulting crony capitalism. Let me now describe the kind of capitalism I advocate: free market capitalism. Free market capitalism means you should be free to pursue what you believe is good, whether that is building low-income housing, brewing beer in your barn, creating a business, or pursuing a profession. Second, free market capitalism fosters personal responsibility and human dignity.

Blaine Bartletts, Compassionate Capitalism

Best Seller Publishing announces the release of Blaine Bartletts new book, Compassionate Capitalism: A Journey to the Soul of Business. It will be available for free download in the Amazon Kindle Store on July 11th. Business is the most pervasive and influential force on the planet today. The net of this is that business, as a prevalent and important force, has a moral responsibility to guide, enhance, value, and nourish the existence of all that it encounters. Business today seldom assesses the efficacy of its activities through the lens of anything but profit. The true purpose of business is to uplift the experience of existing. From our perspective, business is nothing less than a spiritual discipline, it requires the same integrity, commitment, intentionality, courage, discipline, and compassion as any other spiritual discipline. Spiritual disciplines honor life, in all its forms, as having innate and intrinsic value simply because it exists. Its the honoring of this valuethe ennobling of this valuethat is called forth when we approach business as a spiritual undertaking. Compassionate Capitalism by Blaine Bartlett will be free and available for download on Amazon for 5 days at: https://www. Like it or not, approve of it or not, buy in to it or not — in this day and age it is business that is the greatest sculpting force of our cultural landscape. The reason this book is so important is that it will take the legacy story of business and capitalism and use it as a solid foundation to build on as we look to the future to accelerate the paradigm shift. Best Seller Publishing is a Los Angeles Publishing Company dedicated to helping business owners and entrepreneurs become the hunted with their best-selling books.

Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy

Workers get paid wages, so it doesn’t seem as if they are working for free. Even if Cohen is wrong, and individual workers are forced to sell their labor power, notice that it does not yet follow that workers are exploited. Under feudalism, serfs spent part of their working time working in their own fields and the rest working in their lord’s fields. A great deal of their work was wholly unpaid: a fact that was very obvious to all involved, given the physical separation between paid work and unpaid work. Workers spend the first part of their working day working, in effect, for themselves. Under capitalism, the worker’s surplus is appropriated by the capitalist; under socialism, the worker’s surplus is appropriated by society. Saddled with “Alienating” jobs like these, workers work merely to live; as Marx writes, they “Feel themselves at home only when they are not working, and when they are working they do not feel at home”. Workers, so treated, expend little effort at work, ignore orders, under-report their productive capabilities, over-report their output, and so on. Parecon proposes to radically remake the division of labor by creating “Balanced job complexes” in which “The combination of tasks and responsibilities each worker has would accord them the same empowerment and quality of life benefits as the combination every other worker has”. The result is a division of labor that assigns routine, boring, disempowering work to the many, while reserving varied, complex, empowering work for the privileged few. Worker self-management: “Each productive enterprise is controlled by those who work there”. Rigorous, subtle work that mounts a qualified case for socialism using tools of contemporary moral and political philosophy.
