Education and Capitalism

Schooling in the twenty-first century United States is not the product mainly of educational philosophies and resources-together with whatever imagination and initiative that teachers, students, parents, and communities can bring to bear. Instead, it is dominated by the changing demands of capitalist society for an increasingly stratified and regimented workforce. In the first article in this section, John Bellamy Foster analyzes the political economy of education in capitalist society; the relation of this to the evolution of U.S. schools from the early twentieth century on; and the current corporate reform movement aimed at the restructuring and privatization of education-symbolized by the Bush No Child Left Behind and the Obama Race to the Top programs. Today’s conservative movement for the reform of public education in the United States, and in much of the world, is based on the prevailing view that public education is in a state of emergency and in need of restructuring due to its own internal failures. 

In contrast, I shall argue that the decay of public education is mainly a product of externally imposed contradictions that are inherent to schooling in capitalist society, heightened in our time by conditions of economic stagnation in the mature capitalist economies, and by the effects of the conservative reform movement itself. The corporate-driven onslaught on students, teachers, and public schools-symbolized in the United States by George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind legislation-is to be explained not so much by the failure of the schools themselves, but by the growing failures of the capitalist system, which now sees the privatization of public education as central to addressing its larger malaise.

Fierce Compassion: The Role of Spiritual Intelligence in Conscious Capitalism – Conscious Capitalism

Her stomach wrenched with anxiety, Wigglesworth asked the supervisor if she could put him on hold to get rid of another call-a fiction designed to allow her a pause for a few deep breaths. The Conscious Capitalist leaders describe spiritual intelligence as a moral intelligence that gives people the ability to distinguish right from wrong. One of the key benefits of SQ is that it brings about a perspective shift because people who develop it reduce their dependence on ego. Wigglesworth said she came up with the term spiritual intelligence after reading Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence and then finding that there had yet to be any comparable work in the spiritual intelligence field. She set out to demonstrate it was a legitimate trait, developing an assessment and writing a book called SQ21: The Twenty-One Skills of Spiritual Intelligence. 

She is now the president and founder of Deep Change Inc., a company that helps individuals and organizations develop and access their multiple intelligences. Spiritual intelligence is not about converting anyone to any system of belief-it’s about recognizing the innate human need to be connected with the people and world around us. Someone with a blend of IQ, EQ and SQ will be better positioned to lead consciously, as Wigglesworth learned the hard way. At one staff meeting called to address college recruiting, Wigglesworth wasted no time offering her ideas. Her first performance reviews noted her intelligence, but suggested she work on her interpersonal skills.

Seems like the Pope Has Conservative Paul Ryan Rattled

When 1.3 million Americans lose their unemployment benefits on Saturday, they can thank Rep. Paul Ryan. Friends say the man who once worshipped Ayn Rand now takes Pope Francis as his moral role model. It’s true that while knuckle-draggers like Rush Limbaugh attack the pope as a Marxist, Ryan has praised him, which I guess takes a tiny bit of courage since normally Republicans don’t like to buck the leader of their party. Beltway journalists would have us believe Ryan’s love for the guy from Argentina is triggering genuine new interest in helping the poor. 

I admit, I have been immune to Ryan’s various efforts to brand himself as a bright and innovative Republican over the years – and I continue to be. Now we’re supposed to believe Ryan is going to deliver an anti-poverty agenda as soon as the spring. Ryan’s prescription for the poor is, and always has been, a dose of discipline. Woodson apparently finds Ryan a one-man enterprise zone for restoring his national profile. When asked what Ryan has done tangibly for the poor, the Republican came up with one word: neckties. 

Apparently, according to Woodson, Ryan sent neckties to a classroom of teenagers after one admired his while he was visiting. In the spirit of the holiday season, I have to admit there’s something a little bit touching about Ryan’s insistence that the GOP needs an anti-poverty agenda. I have no doubt Pope Francis would support extended unemployment benefits, and a host of other policies to make life easier for poor people and help them find genuine opportunity.

Spiritual Capitalism

Dana Zohar and Ian Marshall, who wrote the book, Spiritual Capital: Wealth We Can Live By, are a fascinating, couple married to each other. Marshall is a Jungian-oriented psychiatrist and psychotherapist. The authors argue that material capitalism, the kind that predominates in America’s corpocracy, is unsustainable, depleting our natural resources, creating political and social instability, eroding our moral standards, and degrading the very meaning of life in terms of its deepest values and aspirations. Maybe their examples unwittingly help to validate their assertion that material capitalism is in a state of crisis. There is much about Zohar and Marshall’s views and ideas with which I agree, such as their view that the capitalism prevailing today is unsustainable and thus needs to be transformed, not totally dismantled. 

The authors are creative thinkers who forced me repeatedly to think outside my own relatively narrow paradigms. At the same time, the authors’ analysis of the problem and their proposed remedy are too unbalanced and insufficient. Material capitalism is far more than a crisis of motivation. Many other factors contribute to the failings of traditional capitalism. Relying on a critical mass of business people to shift upwards their spiritual intelligence is naïve and simplistic.

Compassionate Cannabis

Members and staff of BCCCS at its thirteenth birthday celebration. Dwight joined the BCCCS on the recommendation of his doctor, and he now sits on the non-profit organization’s board. Founded in 1997, the BCCCS is the longest-running medical cannabis dispensary in the Americas, and one of the largest in Canada. Conditions like Dwight’s are why most patients come to the BCCCS – they need safety-tested, high-quality medicine with education on effective use. The BCCCS model is holistic, based on a price-subsidized Wellness Centre, where members receive treatments in ten different healthcare practices, from reiki to nutritional counselling. 

Cannabis can be helpful with confronting addictions such as heroin, cocaine, speed, pharmaceuticals, and alcohol. The BCCCS subsidizes medical cannabis for its members with a number of low-income strains. The BCCCS works closely with contracted growers to check all supplies carefully for contaminants. A Vancouver lab works with the Society to make sure there are no molds, mildews, or toxins in their cannabis. A variety of products are available such as dry cannabis, hashish, edible products like cookies, alcohol-based tinctures, and topical applications. 

Compassion clubs such as the BCCCS exist in a legal grey area. Canada’s federal Senate Special Committee on Illegal Drugs commended the BCCCS as the best model of providing medical cannabis.

What Is Marxism? What is the State?

The working class has seen the welfare state as a vital safety net, which provides basic health, education and security. We live in a class society where the ruling class does not represent the interests of the whole population, where a minority maintains its power and privileges by exploiting the majority. The class with economic dominance and power, the ruling class, created the state to protect itself, hold down its adversaries and guarantee that its will was done. In the last analysis however, if the capitalists feel threatened by the growing power of the working class, they will resort to other forms of capitalist state. One of the considerations of capitalist governments before implementing such plans is the strength of the working class and its ability to defend the historic conquests of the vote, the right to strike, organise in unions and other gains, if the ruling class was to attempt to remove them under a form of dictatorship. There is a series of blatantly political, class laws, relating to things like public order and industrial relations – most notoriously these were the Criminal Justice Act and the various anti-trade union laws introduced by the Tories, which are to do with making it more difficult for working class people to fight the attacks of the bosses. Some sections of the working class and even the middle class, especially young people, are antagonistic to the police. Lenin points out that Marxist revolutionaries, as opposed to reformists, say that the existing bourgeois state cannot be seized ready-made and used in the interests of the working class. Either the working class goes forward to take control of the economy and destroys the repressive apparatus which protects the ruling class and constructs its own institutions for running society democratically, or the leadership attempts a compromise, allows reaction to reorganise itself and move to crush workers and their organisations. In periods of heightened struggle, when the authority of the ruling class is in question and a victory by the working class is on the agenda, it would be irresponsible not to try to minimise the impact of state forces. In the confrontation between the rival powers of the working class and the bourgeoisie, the force used by the ruling class can only be minimised by a mass, well organised and determined movement of the working class. Working class communities in the first instance would be involved in preventing sabotage and disruption of the new socialist society by any disaffected group in the former ruling class.

Compassion Can Only Exist In The Market

As we approach Christmas, a holiday season ripe for the usual anti-capitalism sentiment as countless of people who celebrate the date prepare to buy presents to put under the tree, we are reminded that in times of crisis, only individuals working in a private business, where they have incentives to act responsibly so that they may also benefit themselves, will be able to meet the market’s demands. In the end, no government bureaucrat can do what a simple pizza delivery man can. The story of Eric Olsen of Omaha, Nebraska, is a perfect example of this. After Hurricane Matthew hit Florida, forcing countless of locals to be shunned from the world as communication lines were cut due to the natural disaster, Olsen knew he had to do something to make sure his 87-year-old grandmother was OK.As he attempted to communicate with her, Olsen contacted the local police and the sheriff’s department, and yet nobody could tell him if Claire Olsen, his grandmother, was alive. After two days of agony, Olsen finally had a brilliant idea. Instead of calling another government agency in search for help, Olsen found a local pizza place and made the call that changed everything. Letting the delivery person know about his grandmother’s situation, Olsen asked the delivery person to call him when he finally delivered the pizza. So once the delivery man arrived, he put Claire in contact with her grandson. As it turns out, the joke is really on anyone who truly believes that in a time of crisis, only governments should be trusted to act on our behalf. When we trust the government to take on the responsibilities that truly should be our own, we also give bureaucrats and politicians powers over our own lives that should never be delegated to anyone else but ourselves. This story goes to show that the market takes care of its consumers not because it has power over them, but because it has a responsibility to deliver, otherwise, it loses customers to competitors. Once we all truly understand this, there will be no more need to convince anybody that a party is superior to another, and that a candidate in particular will do anything for us, as the public will finally realize politicians are not to be trusted.

Workers get paid wages, so it doesn’t seem as if they are working for free. Even if Cohen is wrong, and individual workers are forced to sell their labor power, notice that it does not yet follow that workers are exploited. Under feudalism, serfs spent part of their working time working in their own fields and the rest working in their lord’s fields. A great deal of their work was wholly unpaid: a fact that was very obvious to all involved, given the physical separation between paid work and unpaid work. Workers spend the first part of their working day working, in effect, for themselves. Under capitalism, the worker’s surplus is appropriated by the capitalist; under socialism, the worker’s surplus is appropriated by society. Saddled with “Alienating” jobs like these, workers work merely to live; as Marx writes, they “Feel themselves at home only when they are not working, and when they are working they do not feel at home”. Workers, so treated, expend little effort at work, ignore orders, under-report their productive capabilities, over-report their output, and so on. Parecon proposes to radically remake the division of labor by creating “Balanced job complexes” in which “The combination of tasks and responsibilities each worker has would accord them the same empowerment and quality of life benefits as the combination every other worker has”. The result is a division of labor that assigns routine, boring, disempowering work to the many, while reserving varied, complex, empowering work for the privileged few. Worker self-management: “Each productive enterprise is controlled by those who work there”. Rigorous, subtle work that mounts a qualified case for socialism using tools of contemporary moral and political philosophy.

Smith was the Scottish philosopher who became famous for his book, “The Wealth of Nations” written in 1776, which had a profound influence on modern economics and concepts of individual freedom. In 1751, Smith was appointed professor of logic at Glasgow university, transferring in 1752 to the chair of moral philosophy. Smith moved to London in 1776, where he published An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, which examined in detail the consequences of economic freedom. “Wealth of Nations” established economics as an autonomous subject and launched the economic doctrine of free enterprise. Smith laid the intellectual framework that explained the free market and still holds true today. To underscore his laissez-faire convictions, Smith argued that state and personal efforts, to promote social good are ineffectual compared to unbridled market forces. At the end it was discovered that Smith had devoted a considerable part of his income to numerous secret acts of charity. How did the Reformation Contribute to the Shaping of the Modern World

Like the Renaissance, the Reformation drew its inspiration from the ancient world. Renaissance humanists and artists sought to imitate and revive classical art and literary forms; Reformation thinkers aspired to restore the spiritual purity of early Christianity, before the growth of a powerful clergy and a dogmatic theology. They used the Gospels in order to undermine the authority of the Church. By dividing Christendom into Catholic and Protestant, the Reformation destroyed the religious unity of Europe. The distinguishing feature of the Middle Ages, and weakened the Church, the chief institution of medieval society. By strengthening monarchs at the expense of church bodies, the Reformation furthered the growth of the modern secular and centralized state. While absolute monarchy was the immediate beneficiary of the Reformation, indirectly Protestantism contributed to the growth of political liberty another feature of the modern West. Protestantism accomplished this by providing religious justification for revolution against tyrannical rule. There was a spiritual equality of all believers: all were equally Christian; all were equally priests. The Reformation contributed to the creation of an individualistic ethic. Piety was not determined by the Church, but by the autonomous individual, whose conscience, illuminated by God, was the source of judgment and authority. The Reformations stress on individual conscience may have contributed to the development of the capitalist spirit, which underlies modern economic life.

In 1667, John Locke wrote an Essay On Toleration in which he argued that Protestant Dissenters who objected to some aspects of Anglican worship should have full civil rights. Charles II agreed with Shaftesbury and Locke on the advantages of tolerating Protestant Dissent, but he was also wiling to excuse the Roman Catholic sympathies of his brother, James. The Whigs failed to prevent James’ accession, and first Shaftesbury and then Locke were forced to flee to the Netherlands. Locke devoted much of his time to writing on philosophy and political thought. John Locke rejected Filmer’s equation of paternal and political power. In their natural state, Locke insisted, all adults were equal; each individual was subject to no one but God. The Glorious Revolution was welcomed in England, and John Locke’s Two Treatises were frequently reprinted. Locke extended certain general rights of property to all people, although property in land and other major assets was restricted to a minority. Locke did not believe that the state should redistribute property to the poor.

tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique. Open Access Journal for a Global Sustainable Information Society

My reflections in this paper concern revitalizing the critical potential of certain core concepts of Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno’s Dialectic of Enlightenment and bringing it to bear on the digital era in general and in particular on the phenomenon of modern social media. I find that the central philosophical critique of Dialectic of Enlightenment runs deeper than just a critique of contemporary media technique and cultural habits. It is a critical view of the process of civilization, economy and enlightenment as such, a critical view of the seemingly self-evident notion of pure reason, science and technology. What Horkheimer and Adorno are trying to capture and reflect is the very process of rationality backlashing into irrationality. We seem to have reached the era of mathematics and exact calculation, but this leaves us with no sense of control or meaningfulness, and in the face of crisis and systemic contradictions in the now global society we tend to regress and rely on older, more primitive forms of sense-making and coping: magic, mythology and metaphysics – even ritual behaviour. For others, religion acts as a pseudo-spirituality, relieving them of the responsibility to actually live a spiritual life. It’s a Continuum In fact, you could see it not so much as a difference between religion and spirituality as they are two points on a continuum. Religion and spirituality are not really contradictory ideas.

What does Capitalism mean?

Capitalism is an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production, with the goal of making a profit. Central elements of capitalism include capital accumulation, competitive markets, and a price system. There are multiple variants of capitalism, including laissez-faire, welfare capitalism, and state capitalism. Capitalism is considered to have been applied in a variety of historical cases, varying in time, geography, politics, and culture. There is general agreement that capitalism became dominant in the Western world following the demise of feudalism. Economists, political economists, and historians have taken different perspectives in their analysis of capitalism. Laissez-faire economists emphasize the degree to which government does not have control over markets and the importance of property rights. Others emphasize the need for government regulation, to prevent monopolies and to soften the effects of the boom and bust cycle. Most political economists emphasize private property as well, in addition to power relations, wage labor, class, and the uniqueness of capitalism as a historical formation. The extent to which different markets are free, as well as the rules defining private property, is a matter of politics and policy. Many states have what are termed mixed economies, referring to the varying degree of planned and market-driven elements in an economic system.

In Austria, Schubert begins work on his 8th Symphony- known as the Unfinished Symphony. Mary Wollestonecraft Shelley’s Frankenstein presents man and nature. Uprisings in Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, Austria, and Italy reflect the spirit of challenge to the Old Regime that marks this period.

Enlightenment: Failure or Defeat? As an ideologically obstinate communist, when confronted with that system’s failures, will often automatically respond that communism hasn’t failed because in fact it has never been completely attempted, so we can imagine a partisan of the Enlightenment proposing that Enlightenment hasn’t failed, it has merely been stalled or even defeated by other, momentarily stronger, contingencies. Enlightenment thought, while in some cases disparate, tends to postulate certain if/then relationships. It is not enough for a critique of the Enlightenment to observe in opposition to these postulates that in the post-Enlightenment era people are unhappy or herd-like. The critique cannot merely locate instances in which an Enlightenment view of future circumstances is overly optimistic. Along the same lines as Voltaire, Immanuel Kant articulates the process of Enlightenment as one occurring by gradations, that is, among certain individuals, and then others, until eventually it has overtaken all. Correspondingly, each author has a unique understanding of what the primary threat to Enlightenment is, so that each essay contains within it the implication of its own radical alternative: Voltaire, in admitting the need for partisan defenders of the Enlightenment, allows that toleration equals weakness. Correspondingly, Voltaire’s Enlightenment causality schema cannot be challenged. Kant’s understanding of Enlightenment is a shade more perverse, and therefore, more insightful, than that of Voltaire. Voltaire’s Enlightenment cosmology necessitates a blithe faith in history, a belief that anti-Enlightenment forces will not strangle Enlightenment as it is born. Kant’s understanding of Enlightenment is that it is the source of its own detractors, a flaw that no optimism can efface. Sade attributes every sexual whim to Nature, and defines Enlightenment as an obedience to that nature, an obedience newly enabled by the defeat of oppressive religion and monarchism. Voltaire gives, as an example of the line of thinking antithetical to the Enlightenment, the dictum, “Believe what I believe, and what thou canst not believe, or thou shalt perish”, while underlying such an unenlightened philosophy is Dolmancé’s ultimate justification for his own libertinage, “There is no possible comparison for what others experience and what we sense”. Any argument attempting to determine whether or not Enlightenment has failed inevitably reduces to a matter of definitions. Their Enlightenment philosophies, whether internally contradictory or merely glaringly incomplete, effect a certain jubilant hope while neglecting to account for the opposing forces that arise, whether as or against that hope’s fulfillment. In the early 1980s, psychologist John Welwood coined the term “Spiritual bypassing” to refer to the use of spiritual practices and beliefs to avoid confronting uncomfortable feelings, unresolved wounds, and fundamental emotional and psychological needs. According to integral psychotherapist Robert Augustus Masters, spiritual bypassing causes us to withdraw from ourselves and others, to hide behind a kind of spiritual veil of metaphysical beliefs and practices. “Aspects of spiritual bypassing include exaggerated
 detachment, emotional numbing and repression, overemphasis on the positive, 
anger-phobia, blind or overly tolerant compassion, weak or too porous 
boundaries, lopsided development, debilitating judgment about one’s
 negativity or shadow side, devaluation of the personal relative to the
 spiritual, and delusions of having arrived at a higher level of being.” I’m going to go into detail to describe ten specific shadow tendencies of spiritual people. Participate in “Spiritual” activities to make themselves feel superior to other people. What I’m saying is that it’s alarmingly easy to allow your spiritual ideas and practices to become an ego trap-to believe that you’re so much better and more enlightened than all those other “Sheeple” because you’re doing all of these rad #woke things. These people get the idea that they want to jump on the spiritual bandwagon, so they start practicing yoga, wearing New Age fashion items, going to music festivals, drinking ayahuasca, etc. In my experience, tend to be the “Spiritual” people who are using “Spirituality” as a reason to feel superior to others. Ironically, many spiritual people repress all “Non-spiritual” emotions and artificially heighten “Spiritual” emotions/traits such as compassion, kindness, and equanimity. In the most extreme cases, “Spiritual” people end up “Performing cannabis ceremonies” during all their waking hours; taking psychedelics too frequently or in unsuitable contexts; and completely denying that these substances have any negative effects. “Just be positive!” is often employed as a deflection mechanism by “Spiritual” people who would rather not do the difficult work of confronting their own internal issues, wounding, and baggage, let alone the problems of the world. Paradoxically, the seemingly spiritual lesson of self-forgiveness can be especially difficult to internalize for people interested in spirituality. This is a major reason why it’s so common for spiritual people to deflect responsibility-because being honest about their shortcomings would be too painful. It seems to me that many spiritual people become hostile toward science because certain beliefs and practices they find valuable are considered unproven or pseudoscientific within the scientific community. A lot of “Spiritual” people sabotage their own ability to succeed materially.

The Limits of Ethical Capitalism

Last September, at the Clinton Global Initiative conference in New York City, I listened to a well-known Silicon Valley venture capitalist tout the green revolution. While working on a book about the coal industry, I researched an early twentieth-century businessman named Henry Atkinson, best remembered today as the founder of the Southern Company, one of the largest electric power companies – and biggest polluters – in America. Atkinson was a Yankee from a prominent Boston family; his uncle, Edward Atkinson, was an outspoken abolitionist who helped finance and arm John Brown for his disastrous raid on a military arsenal at Harpers Ferry in 1859. Southern plantation owners had long made the case that the cotton industry was dependent on the captive labor of slavery – without it, the southern cotton empire would collapse. In essays such as “Cheap Cotton by Free Labor,” Atkinson argued that rather than providing an incentive for hard work and efficiency, slavery did exactly the opposite. Atkinson believed that a “Free labor” market, in which workers were paid modest wages, had many economic advantages, including motivating them to work longer and harder and freeing plantation owners from the need to supervise and care for slaves. In short, rather than lecture southerners on slavery’s moral outrages, Atkinson appealed to their greed, arguing that by abolishing slavery they could make more money. The context was different, but the logic was the same as what I heard at Clinton’s conference: a better, more efficient economic system is the best cure for social problems. In the months since I encountered Atkinson’s essays, I’ve noticed other parallels between the arguments to abolish slavery and those to stop global warming. In both cases, we are often told that we are dependent on the very thing – cotton, fossil fuels – that is destroying us. Global warming is an entirely different and far broader threat than slavery ever was, but the comparison is valuable for the lessons it reveals about how societies transform themselves. Ultimately, it wasn’t arguments for enlightened capitalism that ended slavery. President Lincoln understood the logic of plantation owners who argued that ending slavery would be destructive, impractical, and costly. Ethical capitalism is all well and good, but our current faith in it may someday look as naïve as Atkinson’s faith in free labor. Like slavery, global warming is a problem that is too big, too complex, and too deeply rooted to be solved by the lure of cold, hard cash alone.

Managerialists espouse a functionalist and enlightenment worldview in which even spirituality has its function in making business more profitable. Walck is cautious about spirituality, reminding us that our global discourse ignores the “Spirituality” of the poor. Christian spirituality played a major role in native genocide. “Six of the many paradigms in the study of spiritual capitalism are paired as follows: affirmative and skeptical postmodern, fundamentalist and ecological, and managerialist and humanist. Each offers different metaphors to spirit. To some spirit is the metaphor of love, festival, transcendence, and self-development. But to other paradigms, spirit is the metaphor of”spectacle,” the “Psychic prison” and the “Instrument of domination” or the privileging of rich over poor class in Herbert Spencer’s “Social Darwinism. Of all the metaphors in Figure 1, the “Culture” approach to spirituality gets the most play in 1999. To me, like so many writers of the culture metaphor, seeks to reinscribe Theory Y and Z, Maslow, corporate culture and everything else within spirituality. First, there is a need for more basic research before we integrate spirituality with other popular consulting models. Konz and Ryan did a study of the mission statements of the 28 US Jesuit universities and revealed that maintaining an organizational spirituality is no easy task. Cavanagh, in my view, takes a refreshingly critical view of the context of the spirituality movement. Cavanagh is skeptical about mixing the New Age movement in spirituality with the good old time religions. Third, there is a need to raise questions about teaching spirituality in the Business College. His definition of spirituality embeds service in a test: “My test of authenticity is the extent to which progress in the spirit of journey manifests itself in loving and compassionate service.” Yet if we hold up the history of capitalism to this same test, I am not sure we would pass. We need research on how to teach spirituality and service in non-religious institutions. For teaching spirituality is a bit easier in Jesuit and other religious universities with an explicitly spiritual component to their missions than in public universities. As Biberman, Whitey, and Robbins remind us, “Without spirituality the normative purpose of business is profit.” Yet spirituality could bring balance to an otherwise predatory capitalism.
